I feel like i might be judged :( but hi

Hi there. Nice to meet you and you'll get no judgement here, just all the support you may need.

Good luck with your GP visit and your consultation.

Can I ask are you set on the band or will you wait and see what the consultant advises?

I've had a band and now have a sleeve plus I'm a suffer of depression. This was never an issue for either op though, so hopefully it won't be for you too x

No problem! I understand the recovery time might be an issue for you and everyone recovers differently but all procedures are (usually) done laparoscopically so that reduces the recovery time.

In my humble opinion, I would always go with the advice of the professionals. I loved my band and it worked well for me but some health problems along the way meant it had to go and now I have a permanent reduction in the size of my stomach.

My problem was the volume of food rather than the quality, the band and sleeve restrict what you can eat. The bypass restricts with the addition of not absorbing everything. There is also the mini bypass to consider, if your provider offers that?

Sorry if I'm raising more questions for you but I'm sure that during your consultation it will all become a much easier decision for you. After all this is all about you and whats best for you :D

Haha this was me - I done loadsss of research - I was so excited going into consultation but it was a bit of a shock as I new risks etc but surgeon was quote serious and put a downer on it lol ( but thats their job) - I am booked in for band on the 18th of July! Good luck!! Hopefully weight loss will help with your self esteem and depression xxx

Hello and welcome :)

I went for a consultation this time last year and came out of it and was like nooo..i can do it on my own (it is alot of money/scary etc) ..year later nothing has changed and still feel cra - so I have commited 100% now lol reality is, i aint guna do it on my own. My friend had hers done 7 weeks ago, so i am lucky i ask her a million questions plus i have gone with same company and upgraded for 5 yrs cover (only extra £300) so has reduced my anxiety a little. I have gone with healthier weight, i think if your going to have it - book it and have it a few weeks later. I booked mine 3 months in advance and didnt receive much info but closer i get, more info i get. My friend felt really informed but she had consultation and had op 3 weeks later.

My consultation was good btw - I ideally wanted mine done straight away but he said I shouldnt - i am going on holiday for 10 days on 24th of June - he advised for me to do it when i get back, also need to give up smoking and didnt know any ov this - hense why i was on a bit of a downer. But i know i shouldnt rush into it so booked it after i get back from holiday and quiting smoking for few weeks x

Do you think u will have it or you 50/50 atm?

Hope this helps xxx :)

Yes spire is a big brand/company so you will be fine with them! Yeh defo ask them, I think it gives you peace of mind with the cover - it was £300 plus you got 6 weeks worth of diet products free (which on their own was £170 )so i dont understand why people dont opt for extra cover - hopefully its not that much different with spire x

Ermm ... didnt really get a good vibe with the consultant, plus he was like 30% go wrong (HW has amazing stats) and was really pushing me for a sleeve - reason i dnt wont it, is because i dont want my stumock cut if u know what i mean - least its just a band around it and they stitch u back up lol not so intrusive... but everyone is dif so dnt let me put u off!

Is your consultation tomorrow? Be honest with them, tell them that your worried and whats on your mind. They will hopefully answer some ov ur concerns and put ur mind at rest.

Ps... I have distant myself from friends but because i am ashamed of my weight. I lost ALOT a few years ago and felt a million dollas but put it all back on ... i am an over thinker anyway (thought ov people seeing me made my heart drop) so removed myself from social media etc only have 1 close friend that i actually go out with - all because of my self esteem. I am lucky to have a supporting bf..i was at my lowest when i got with him (13st) 5 yrs later im at just over 19st (his actually got my surgery loan out in his name, as i have car finance lol) <3

Its blimmin hard but weight and what i look like is important to me and I just wana feel normal again and not hiding myself in hot months like these..summer is never a good feeling lol

Xxx

Providers often have different prices depending on the weight of the patient. Taking into account the increased risk of operating on a larger person. They are also open to haggling, so worth bearing in mind.

Its worth asking exactly what is covered, i.e. what type of revision will they perform with the band within the two years. It's maybe a new thing for them to cover this, my aftercare package certainly didn't and just included band fills / de-fills as required. It can take a fair few to get you to the point of good restriction, which can be frustrating. Have a read of some of the band threads and diaries for an idea. You will need to visit a clinic to get these done too, so check that they do them near you. In the past I've travelled down to London and up to Leeds to get a band fill.

Also does the two years include dietitian access, as this is a really important part of good aftercare? Good aftercare is key to being a successful bander, that and compliance with the post op diet of course :D

Welcome to the forum.
I had a bypass on 27th May.
I'm recovering well & can honestly say the pain has been minimal, only really had pain medication in hospital for first couple of days & recovery a lot quicker than i expected so I wouldn't let that put you off.
Everyone is different but I personally wouldn't have gone for the band from the research I did pre op.

Oooo...I didnt know about haggling - bit late for me now :(.

Yeh I done my research re: after care package and complications etc.

Mazza - how did you find your band? Did you have any issues? Did u lose much and last question, did u find it hard to change your eating habits (e.g. did u struggle with the lack of food u eat)

:)

Let me know how the consultation goes flyaway xxxx

Yes you can haggle I got £700 off my op by doing this, another company offered it cheaper but decided on the one I did due to the surgeon. They both had good aftercare packages which were better than if I'd gone to the hospital direct.

Hi @Nickynooo it was all great until I became ill. I lost all of my excess weight within a year. My problem was always ate too much and the band will stop you doing that BUT and its a very big but, you control what goes in still. It's really important that you change your eating habits if you want to be successful as sweet things and 'slider' food go down only too well. Its the protein and fruit and veg that will keep you full and on the right track.

It was after a few years the problems started. I have a large hernia which was making me vomit if I bent etc. This gave me oesphagitus (swelling of the oesophagus) which can lead to cancer (there was no indication that it would though). My band tightened, as it does with excess vomiting and I got acid reflux too - life was pretty unbearable to be honest.

They couldn't treat the oesophagus or reflux with my band in, so it had to come out. That's after it being empty for a year. I then had to wait another eight months to convert to the sleeve and when my weight is back down to what it should (I put some on with an empty band and then when it was removed) they will repair my hernia and my damaged stomach muscles, so that I don't get any more :D
