OMG Nic

I have NO idea LiL (is it low carb Nicole ??)

Why does it have to be low-carb, unless you need to be in ketosis, which eases hunger.

Its to shrink the liver. The pre-op diet is not about weight loss, but about making the liver smaller and easier to move during surgery. The weight loss is just a bonus!

I am almost sure that low carb will do nothing to actually shrink the liver. The main advantage of low carb is that it stops you being hungry. The best way to shrink the fat off the liver is by a low-fat diet. Of course, low calorie is good too, but low fat will shrink the liver, and low carb will stop you being hungry if it gets you into ketosis, as being in ketosis is the main advantage of Lighterlife and Cambridge, because a ketogenic diet is a natural appetite supressant.
Very low fat is the way to shrink the liver.

Low carb does shrink the liver, because without carbs your body does not produce glycogen, which is stored in the liver and holds 4 times its weight in water, hence the rapid losses on the liver shrinking diet - similar to the rapid losses on CD or LL. It is also the reason for the rapid gain for most people when they "come off" their LL or CD regime without following the maintenance phases of the diet.

My own surgical team recommended either a milk diet, or a low fat low carb diet with food (around 1000 cals if I remember rightly. I think that is the same advice that most, if not all bariatric surgical teams advise.

As always, people should follow the advice of their own surgical team.

Thanks IRJ for that. I have experience that low fat diets shrinks a fatty liver, but as stated, different clinics use different diets - either low carb or low fat. It is a shame though that the original poster can't eat root vegetables, but if the carb value is too high then that is what she must avoid.

Just so you know... fruit is very high in carbs... but low in cals.

when i did my pre op, i did it for 10 days, and lost 11lbs.

I mainly ate meat and salad. Sometimes id have some lean minch with a little tinned toms, garlic and a heap of herbs (so like a really basic bol) oh and a wee bit of onion. Fage i used to make my salad more interesting (its a bit like sour cream)

I usually allowed myself a half a banana a day (but not every day) ... after a while it gets easier though :)

I did the atkins diet for 6 months last year, so i was kindda used to it... but i did low cal/carb for my pre op, so no cheese etc.

Mainly kept to 800-1000 cals a day :)

.x.
