Hiya all - i am a newbie......
been reading everybodys posts and it has helped me a lot, but still not sure....
What it is, is that i meet with my surgery on the 15th of this month and i am not sure what to go for bypass or banding, my consultant has given me a choice which dosn't help. my bmi is 42.6 - some people are telling me the banding is better and some are saying the bypass is....Please could any of you lovely ladies and gents tell me if you was in two minds and what made your mind up.....any advice would be great......Take care xx

Hi BB, welcome to Mini's :)

Which surgery to have is a very personal decision. There is a thread here on pro's and con's of either.

I found that my surgeon helped me to make the decision, we discussed my eating habits and he gave me his advice on which would be best.

Thanks for that.....i have been told that if you snack eat the band isn't right.....I am seeing my surgeon on the 15th oct....so he will tell me what's right.....I hope - there is nothing worst than having a choice..

thanks shellbell I will let you know how i get on xx

i was basically told that to get to where i neded to be within a healthy BMI the only thing the endocrainologist would offer me was a bypass. So for me the desision was made. Good luck with whatever you decide. Take care

i had to make the choice but for me it was easy i just couldnt face the bypass when you go to see surgeon again have another chat and tell him your not sure he wil talk you thru the pro's and cons and say what is best for you and your eating habbits

Hi BB

I originally wanted the band, but on meeting my consultant i changed my mind, the weight lose figures were just far to low to me and as i needed to lose loads it was a no brainer, the bypass also means there is no way back, and to me that means no way back to being fat again.......also it freaked me out thinking i'd have a plastic thing inside me and a port in my side !

Hi i was given the option of either and after discussing my eating habits the surgeon advised me that he felt the bypass was right for me. it is a personal choice and you have to choose what you feel is right for you. just do your reaserch and ask the surgeon what he feels would suit you best. good luck and keep me posted x

Hi I had the bypass, went in thinking about the band but nurse and surgeon convinced me that with my eating habits the bypass would be more suitable,
What I find is that if you are a grazer and have a sweet tooth and find your self always hungry then you are more suited for the bypass, if your problem is portion control and not so much snacking and preference for savoury stuff then the banding can be a more suitible option.

One big thing as hard as it is, please be totaly honest with your surgeon on your eating habits, mine asked me if I snacked or ate big meals I told him that I had ability to do both!!

I too like to graze I liken myself to a cow in a field at it non stop lol....I have asked for the bypass and the surgeon agrees...x

I had a friend this morning who is not happy that I have opted for bypass he cannot understand that it also goes on your eating habits etc. He even wants me to down grade to the balloon! I have done my research and made an informed decision and lucky for me the surgeon and the consultant agree it will suit my life style and at the end of the day they are who I trust. Good luck and if in any doubt ask more questions....xx

Hiya all,
I am thinking more towards a bypass ( because i snack often, well all the time hahah)

Does anybody know whether you are in a lot of pain after keyhole surgery.....My friend has had the open surgery done in leeds and she was in a lot of pain.... I am hoping keyhole is a lot better ! !
i am excited about having this done but so scared as well, me and pain don't go well together....
Would love your views ! ! xx

I was in pain for about 3 days, but most of that was in my back from being laid flat on the op table for so long (I have joint problems). Not much tummy pain at all, and I had no wind problems either. I had painkillers in the hospital, but once I was discharged had none, as I didn't need them!

So for me, no it wasn't really a painful experience, but I was lucky with the wind.

Hi i had the bypass keyhole surgery. I was uncomfortable for a few days but the pain relief helped. The main problem as shel has said was the trapped wind after it hurt like hell but once i'd burped numerous times it eased!!! x

I was sure I wanted a bypass after lots of research, which the surgeon agreed with. I had keyhole surgery and can honestly say from coming round after the operation felt fine no pain and had no pain (except wind pain) since. I was back doing my housework on day 3 and back to work just under two weeks. I don't pick up anything heavy and still have plenty of rest, as anyone would after major surgery but feel really well. However, everyone is different. I was even given a local before the arterial drip was put in didn't even feel it. Good luck with your decision.
