India

Hi all,

Yet another question from me! (I'll be back to work next week so will spend less time procrastinating!)

I am going to India on holiday from the 17th March.

I should be on soft food by now and normal by the time we go. But due to set backs I am back on fluids and maybe soft food by the time I go.

I want to take something with me just in case to have on me if I need to eat. I was thinking protein bars, but are they going to be too hard for me to handle?

I was thinking of taking some of the protein samples I got and asking the hotels to mix them into shakes.

Any ideas would be great x

Ooh, I'd be really careful at this stage, especially if you've been having some problems lately. Lentil or chick pea dishes will be good as they have protein and you can mash them up on the plate if needed. Be very careful with meat as it often doesn't go down too well, especially beef. Avoid dry meat, but chicken tikka can be ok as it's well marinated in yoghurt and usually quite tender - good with a raitha. Be careful with the spices - some people are fine with spicy food post-op but not everyone and even if you're used to it your tolerance may have changed. Fish curries might be better than meat, prawns should be fine. Avoid rice, have vegetables or a lentil dahl instead. Avoid breads although you might tolerate a tiny bit of flatbread like paratha or chapatti. Chew, chew, chew !!! And I would consider taking protein powder as a backup. In terms of ordering, I wouldn't order a meal for yourself at all, just ask for a plate. You might try a Lassi but check it hasn't got added sugar.

Thanks Rose! Your knowledge of Indian food is great!

I am going to be really careful and was planning on sticking to Lassis and yogurt, them maybe having some thin dhal. I am pretty much living on the sauce for curries my mom makes with added water so it's like a soupy broth.

Fortunately we are staying at really nice hotels so I should be able to ask for custom made food for me.

I will take some protein samples to be on the safe side!

Thanks again for the great advice xxx

I love Indian food... and we've been to Goa several times so I'm familiar with eating out there.

International hotels will do a range of different food anyway and you can always order soup.

Whereabouts in India are you going ?

We are going to New Delhi, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Agra, Amritsar. I can't wait, my sister and Hubby have never been and we normally go and see family, but this is a purely tourist trip.

Xx

Ooh, I'm jealous ! I really want to do northern India. We did a 12hr train trip from Goa to Mumbai last year, which was an experience !

You'll have to tell us all about it when you get back ! xx

Keeley, last year we went to the States 3 months after my op. We got insurance from Insure and Go online. I told them about my op and it didn't cost any more. (Unlike the extra £200 it cost us as my husband had a heart attack 3 years ago  )
