Is it scarier because it is elective surgery?

Another forum member put this to me when we had tea. The feelings I am having this week, this my last week pre op. Is it scarier because we have pursued and elected to have this surgery, rather than a decision made by a Doctor?

When I had my pre op the sister was asking me questions etc... and she said it is very scary as it is not like a bone is broken and they need to mend it as it is us that decide this durgery but she said no matter what the outcome is the same it is to make life better.
