Is their anyone else who is waiting for WLS at Walsall Manor?

waynetta

I'm on the losers Rd.
HI, I'm waiting for my bypass surgery date , due to be carried out at Walsall Manor Hospital and was just wondering if anyone else is in the same position as me? ;)

Hi Allie. Im still waiting for referral to Walsall Manor for WLS. Saw GP few weeks ago who said he would send off referral letter that day but Im not expecting to hear until after christmas and new year holidays.

Theres quite a crowd of us now for Walsall Manor. Do you have any idea when your surgery will take place?

Hi Sam, ive just had my pre op tests and got another appointment on the 6th Jan, then they said it could take up to 5 weeks, so going by that, hopefully 2nd wk in Feb. Well i'm keeping everything crossed that it will be then or sooner.
So if your time frame is the same as mine its gona be about 6mths for you. However I had a little delay with funding, cuz i'm under Sandwell PCT and they would only fund an open procedure. This does'nt bother me though, just happy I got funding at all! keep in touch and let us know how it goes.

I not saying this to worry or upset anyone but Walsall Manor unfortunately has a small habit of canceling surgery's (mine was canceled twice with less then 24hrs notice) you are always given a new date but it can delay things (obviously) so please dont bank on a certain date.

The hospital does have to try and operate on you within 18 weeks of you been put on the waiting list but if they have already missed that target for the year they will focus on other waiting lists, keeping them under the 18 weeks prior to the wls one.
Other then that, Walsall is an excellent place to have your surgery as Mr Khan is one of the best bariatric surgeons in the country.

Good luck

I had my initial appointment at Walsall Manor on 6th Nov where I was weighed, height measured etc. I saw Ana, the nurse and Dr. Hartland. My next appointment is on 26th March. I am due to have Roux en Y gastric bypass via open surgery.

My referring PCT is Birmingham East and North.

18 weeks is the government rule whereby a patient's first definitive treatment must take place witin 18 weeks of referral from the GP to consultant led department. This means that the operation does not have to happen within 18 weeks of referral.

I believe that walsall work it from when you are accepted onto their waiting list which is after youve been seen at the weightloss clinic for the first time , discussed possible surgery options, they then discuss your case at their monthly review meeting and then put you on the list. I know this as I work for a pct and deal with the manor on a regular basis.

HTH

I was told at the first meeting that I was to be out straight on the waiting list but this did not hapen until dec 23rd 2 months after the initial meeting with dr hartland, but hey at least i on there now lol.
Hiya all, you get put on the list after they have recieved funding from your pct, I know this because I had to ring Mr Hartlands secretary to confirm I would agree to an open procedure rather than a keyhole one as Sandwell PCT would not fund the latter. I'm not bothered how they do it though, I just feel really lucky to have been funded at all, cuz it is like winning the lottery!

Hi, Allie,
I'm not as far advanced as you. Still working up to going to see the GP. If I get that far it will be the Manor for me, as well. I'll be interested to follow your progress :)

Well come on girlie get your ass moving up the doc's cuz the longer you leave it the more unhappy you will become! I put it off for years and I've just got bigger and bigger and more depressed! Good luck!

I have just phoned Mr. Khan's secretary to see what my appointment in March is actually for. She says it is an outpatient appointment to see Dr. Kenrick, the psychologist. :(
Hiya Brun, So what doe's that mean? Have you got to go and plead your case with the psyc team, before you go any further?

Has anyone else had to go through this psyche procedure?

Ive seen him and a lot of others have too. I was sent to see him as I have a history of depression. I didnt like him as I found him very patronising but its just one more hoop you have to jump through. He just makes sure you have realistic expectations etc. Nothing to worry about at all.

Also, for info every pct is different with regards to when you get funding and are then accepted onto the waiting list for surgery.

Walsall PCT gave me funding in Oct 07 but i didnt get my first appointment with the team at the manor until late Dec 07 and i wasnt put on the waiting list until Feb 08. Its best not to try and guess when your op is although i know i did, as its the NHS and you could be disappointed LOL i can say that as I work for them.

Good luck

I rang Walsall Manor again today and spoke with Ana, the bariatric specialist nurse.

She told me that Dr. Kenrick has a massive backlog and that is why his appointment is not until March. Some people land out seeing him post-op.

She says the surery waiting list is still 5 months so I should still be on course for April/May 2009.

I feel a lot better today! ;)

welcome to minimins natalie, there is a big WM group around here one should be along shortly who can answer any questions you have

hi natalie and :welcome:to minis and to The Walsall Manor Masssiiivvveee
is the appointment on the 20th the one for your bloods and respiratory function test and do you have one a month later for the anaesthetist?

I have my bloods on 27th Feb and the one to Mr Yousef on 24th March.

With regard to what happens waynetta has had both her pre ops and should be able to tell all on whats to be expected.

Do you come under BEN PCT or Sandwell?

I am new on here I have just had my pre op appointment from Walsall which is 20th march at 2:30 can anyone tell me how long I am looking now for my operation what happens at your pre op I Cant wAit till I have it done
Hi natalie, if all your pre op tests are ok, when you see the anaesthetist and he is happy with you, you might get your date off him, there and then. I did and it was for 5wks later. The trouble is, nothing is set in stone, so don't be dissapointed if that does'nt happen cuz I heard that the waiting is longer than 5wks now. All you have to think is yeap, i'm having my op this year. Then if it happens sooner, rather than later its a bonus.Ok chucks... oh and welcome. x
