JAW WIRING

sorry i dont know, isnt that a little extreme ??wouldnt wls be a better option ?

do they still do this operation?

I haven't heard of anyone who's had it done since the 80s. I would have thought it would be a referral to and orthodontic surgeon. I thought they had stopped because it was so easy to cheat with the aid of a liquidiser.

I agree with the others, dont think this is done anymore, your teeth rot as well as the other draw backs and the weight will just come back on when its taken off....xx

Doesnt work

i broke my jaw badly at one point and i thought that it was the time to lose weight to make something good out of something bad.

I got admitted into hospital because i was eating the right things.

And yes i did lose wieght but because i lost it fast even though i kept to a diet i put it back on so fast you would'nt believe it.

The reasn why bypasses work so well is because they remove 1 meter od intestine so you dont take in as much cals so even if your do eat more you can take as much as 50% less cals

to be honest i would steer clear of the jaw wire.

And if somewas intent of having something like this done it would be 100% cheaper to get a gimp mask with a ball place where the mouth is and padlock it up and give someone who hates you have the key (lol)

Hi there! Are you considering this as a route to weight loss? I know my neighbour had her stomach stapled and jaw wired, must be a good 20 years ago. She was quite successful, she went from something like 20 stones down to about 9, put a bit back on but has generally kept it off.

However, in the past before I realised there was a much better alternative these days, I thought that was what they still did. If you are considering this for weight loss, would you consider a gastric bypass or banding? There are alot of people on here who have had or are waiting to have weight loss surgery. Maybe people here can help you with some advice.

Welcome to the forum too!!!

I had it donkeys years ago, the Queen Elizabeth, Birmingham did it and it was aweful, lost weight, but it all went back on as soon as they removed it.
Uncomfortable, difficult to clean your teeth so your breath smells, not recommended and that's probably why they don't do it today. :(

Stomach stapling is what is now known as a bypass but with improved technique. All WLS is now much safer than it used to be

OMG did'nt think they still did that. I always joke that I need it doing...but would never seriously consider it. It sounds truely awful and very archaic!

Hi Taz - I know obviously that the bypass is a stomach stapling - fingers crossed at some point I will be having it. What I really meant was that the jaw wiring sounds so barbaric nowadays and wouldn't be something I'd want to do - what would happen if you were sick??? My dad broke his jaw in several places and had to have it wired, he had to live on liquidised food for a while and lost alot of weight, but he was sick once and the panic on his face made me so scared... Thank god they don't do that now unless it's for something like my dad's situation.

Sorry hun, I didn't mean to sound patronising! Good luck for your bypass :fingerscrossed:
I never thought about being sick, what an awful thing!

Hi Taz! I was just hoping this poster would come back as I thought perhaps we might put them off saying it's barbaric etc, when perhaps they could be getting some good advice from people on here who have had a bypass or band. I'm truly not sure they even do jaw wiring unless someone had broken their jaw. If someone is considering something that extreme, there must be a good reason for it, just hope we can offer some advice for less extreme actions. So many on here can testify as to the benefits and also some of the pitfalls, but when all is said and done it has to be someone's own decision. I don't think the poster will find anyone on here who has had their jaw wired though, do you?

No I totally agree with you hun, I think it was banned as a form of weight control many years ago. I too wish the OP would come back to see the comments as she seems to be seriously considering this avenue. What is always good to remember though is that if a proceedure is banned in this country and you go abroad to have it done then there is every possibility that no one in this country would be able to deal with any complications that arise from it when you get back. Also, you would have to go back to the US to have it removed. The total cost would be astronomical, much better paying £7000 for a band if you can't get it on the NHS than go for something like that
