Hi my name is Sharon and I have been thinking about the decision to have a gastric operation for many years. I have struggled with my weight since senior school. I am a proud mum to 3 boys aged 11, 8 and 3. My decision to have the gastric operation has a lot to do with my eldest son who is a special needs child! I need to be healthier, fitter and more able to take better care of him and myself. I finally spoke to my doctor on Friday about being referred and he has agreed to it! Just excited about the whole process starting it can't come soon enough!

Welcome to the forums and good luck in your WLS Journey :) xxx

Hi Sharon. It will prove to be one of your best decisions in your life. Go for it 100% It's no easy fix, but it gets you on the right track for a more healthier and fitter 'you'.

Welcome to the wls site, lot of helpful people on here to discuss any worries or thoughts you may want to discuss. xx

Ok, I had to go back to the doctors to check the blood test that they wanted done (all clear :).) before the referral. Couldn't get to see the original doc as off for 2 weeks and I didn't want to wait that long. I'm now being told that I have got to follow a 3 tier weight of workshop before they will refer me. Has anyone heard of this before, as I have searched the web and can't seem to find anything about it? My BMI is just over 40, I thought I could get a referral just because of that let alone my other circumstances? Any advice would be great, thank you x

Hi Sharon

Different PCTs have different criteria. Although my PCT doesn't do this I have read on the forums of people that have had to 'jump through this hoop'.

Hopefully one of them will be along soon x

Hi Sharon.
Just wanted to say hi and welcome to the group :). I'm in Scotland and one of the criteria here is that All Appropriate non-surgical measures have been attempted for at least 12 months but have failed to achieve or maintain significant weight loss. But as Lincs Lass has said different PCTs have different criteria. X

Hi Sharon, Wellcome to the group. I hope you won't have to wait too long for your GastricBypass surgery. Glad it is going well so far. You will find a lot of helpful people and great advice here.

Hi Sharon - this should give you the information you need (assuming you are under West Sussex PCT). Scroll down to the heading "Tier 3 – Specialist community weight management service for severe and complex obesity"

Managing obesity in primary care - NHS West Sussex

I have had to do this weight management tier also before I could be referred for surgery. A lot of PCTs expect their patients to do this and to have tried "everything" including medication. Unfortunately just meeting the criteria isn't enough :( Anyway, the sooner you can get on the weight management programme the sooner you will be on the road to surgery :) x x
