Hi, I've been having trouble in the toilet department and my doctor has given me Lactulose!!!
Can I bypassers take it as I thought it was sugar? Will it make me dump?
Thanks tasha xx
I have had this before, it is very high in sugar and oh so sweet, even too sweet for a non sweet food fan . I would defo advise against using , you need something more natural hun . HTH xxx
Lactulose makes me dump and makes my blood sugar rise so although its synthetic our bodies react The same. Movicol is more wl friendly. Drink as much water as you can as in most cases constipation is caused by dehydration.
I think your doctor has not listened to you properly or misunderstood you. It seems like he was thinking you were worried it would make you put weight on. Silly doctor. Ring reception and explain that you cant take it because of the reaction your body now has to high sugar content things and ask for a replacement with no sugar content like fibragel or something.
Good luck and definately dont take lactalose.

Lactulose isn't absorbed by the body......the rest of the ingredients are though.
Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide in solution form for oral administration. Each 15 mL of Lactulose solution contains: 10 g Lactulose (and less than 1.6 g galactose, less than 1.2 g lactose, and 1.2 g of other sugars). It should be used with caution in diabetics.
Galactose is a simple sugar. Lactose is a sugar that is found most notably in milk. Then of course there are the other added sugars. I would avoid it, even though the Whittington hospital has it in their patient leaflet as a recommended laxative! http://www.whittington.nhs.uk/Documents/Gastric%20Bypass%20Feb%202010_8883.pdf
Edited to add; I used to be a medical rep and i sold laxatives for a while, hence the interest!
I second the movicol, much better for post bypass. If you are impacted, ie feel the need to go but can't physically pass anything, you can get either glycerol suppositories or enemas from your gp too.
My GP said the same thing as yours when i questioned it as he prescribed it. I spoke to another bypasser before i took some and she said it had made her dump so i didn't dare take it. I phoned my specialist nurse for advice and she said to go back and ask for movicol. It did the trick and i still use the odd sachet every now and again when i need help
You can buy Movicol or Fybogel which take maybe a day or so to work or if you want to go now buy Micralax or Micolette enemas which are small tubes of fluid which make you go within about 15-30mins. Senna also works (senokot tablets) or Dulcolax tablets too- these work overnight.

Definitely avoid lactulose.
