Lansoprazol - breathlessness ?asthma or lactose?

Hi all

I am 3.5 weeks post op. Want to hear from fellow asthma and or lactose intolerance suffers taking this medication. Or anyone else with similar breathlessness after taking lansoprazol.

Sadly I have both asthma and lactose intolerance but latter only since surgery and I am very breathless after I take my lansoprazol.
At first I thought it was post op asthma. Then I changed the time I took the lansoprazol to later morning and my breathlessness (severe) came on only after the tablet lasting hours only able to speak2/3 words at a time and stomach cramps (mild).

So GP swapped me to omprezole dispersible and my breathlessness stopped!

Great yes?
No!

The razor sharpe pains have returned in left below rib cage area and acid bubbling up my gullet at night (try to sleep sitting up but slide down).

I have gone back on the lansoprazol today as worried about the acid build upon a fresh butchered stomach. I have to take buscopan for stomach cramps and steroid inhaler for breathing before the lansoprazol 20mg morning and night.

On omprezol was on calpol for pain and gaviscon 3 times a day and acid was starting to build up in 2 days only!

I have returned to lansoprazol as could only manage 2 days on omprezole.

Anyone else having these difficulties...what helped?

Have a word with a qualified pharmacist is my advice...they know a lot more about the best way forward for you as acid will be horrific! Good luck

How much Omeprazole were you prescribed. it may be the dose needs increasing. I am only on 10mg but after gall bladder op I was on 20g for a number of years.

What are you eating?

Hi

Yes spoke to pharmacist who said although they both from same family of drugs the omperazole does work differently and works in intestine more. I need the acid around the staples to reduce only which is what the lansoprazol was for. Back on lansoprazol but acid their but not as bad hope the 2 days off the lansoprazol hasn't caused something too bad and the next few doses calm it right down. I am taking the pump and buscopam half hour before the lansoprazol which is better than waiting for the cramps and breathlessness too happen first. So a bit better now. I think I have become a bit anxious over the symptoms as had pains in chest late morning.

I was prescribed 40mg of omeprazole to take every morning and would dissolve it in tablespoon of water. But the pain in my abdominal area including my umbilical hernia was painful and swollen. I don't know if I should have given it longer but terrified of this sudden acid just coming up my gullet which I had never experienced before. Didn't want it getting worse as painful.

I was eating things bland like chicken in water and veg it was cooked in, fish pie home made. All lactose free milk and no snacks or sweet drinks etc. 2 half cups of tea a day. Still on purée stage but mashing stuff up in the liquid to make really soft. Eat 4/5 hours before bed have one drink of NAS squash 2hrs pre bed. Had chicken and cauliflowers mashed today.

I would contact your team and ask them.

It might be that you need a split dose, half in the morning and half in the evening. This is what i was suggested as I was having nausea on waking in the first few weeks.

Best to contact them and see what they say.

When I first contacted team about 1/2 weeks post surgery re breathlessness I was told this was nothing to do with them and had to contact GP. I do feel let down as they have just washed their hands. Thankfully GP has been fab but aware not specialist in this type of tier 4 area. So tbh don't feel I can go to the team now but can go to GP who is great and caring. Will get back to GP this week re omeprazole non effect re acid in few days as does call me back straight away as my breathing was so bad. Giving lorazapol a few days again to see if breathing gets as bad, really hoping it doesn't.

That doesn't sound good Hun.
I've forgot the odd tablet and had to give myself a talking to!
Definitely speak to GP / team again.

Mrs N it is so important to take them and no other drug compares even if can't hardly breath and then fatigue etc I am hoping this passes when lactose intolerance passes.

Maybe GP needs to communicate with Team direct??

GP on leave so spoke to surgeon secretary who got hold of surgeon. This breathlessness was never heard of and told it just didn't agree with me. Start omeprazole 40mg tonight and then twice a day so double what I had on weekend. I think this is needed as 40mg did not touch me. Also noticed even with lactose free milk in tea getting acid, just had some gaviscon now after cuppa. So in hour will dissolve the omeprazole in tablespoon water as ? Dont know how I will cope with tablet that big to swallow. Fingers crossed the 80mg will help reduce the acid I had on 40mg daily. But also stop this breathlessness. Thanks for advice and glad now I got to speak to specialist.

Excellent, I thought that might be the case - one dose in morning and one in evening.

Can you take gaviscon when on omeprazole? Wasn't sure you could take both but I might be wrong - might be worth checking that.

Not sure about dissolving the tablet in water if it is not a dissolvable tablet. what about cutting in half and swallowing it like that? I was worried about tablets but my surgeon said shouldn't be a problem a few days after surgery to swallow them! I won't say it was easy but I managed to get them down!

Hope you get less acid tonight and a better sleep.

Thanks @Hannah2 . Yes makes more sense re extra tablet at night like when on other one. It was at night when worst the acid. Real bad pain could hardly get out of bed reminded me of first 24 hrs after op!
Yes I can take gaviscon with omeprazole but not lansoprazol as they work different ways to reduce acid. Told to take it 3 times a day.
Ohh I didn't know about tablets and told I could not start tablets until on food stage ie vits, iron etc
They are dispersible tablets and instructions states do not cut or chew them must be swallowed whole. But few lines down says for swallowing difficulties and children dissolve in tablespoon of water. They dissolve in 5 minutes. So all taken. Bit nervous of the acid again. Stomach talking to me but not sure how night will pan out? Fingers crossed!

Anyone know if you can take calpol after ompreprazol? Can't lay sat up lol so sat on edge of bed straight up waiting for this acid pain to disappear.

@Want2b3 excellent, didn't realise the two worked in different ways - I have lansaprozole so that is where I got that from!

Apologies for questioning the dissolving of the other tabs too!

Sorry to see you had bad acid again. Hope you managed to take some pain killers and get some sleep. Must be awful to have that acid pain.

For taking the tablets, I am bypassed so that might be the difference.

So many rules!!!

Anyway, hope you are ok and got some sleep.

I got confused with the Omeprazole I was prescribed post-op as had been on the capsules which you can't disolve. I was given red pills which it was't clear were soluble until I asked pharmacy. They was more soaking than dissoluble but found it tasted better if I soaked in NAS squash.

I was taking soluble paracetamol at the same time as omep with no problems but then I didn't have a major acid problem. What does in say in the leaflet you got with them?

@Hannah2 ask away it only what I learnt from pharmacist and leaflets
@SAM55 mine are a pink/wine color and takes about 5 mins to dissolve on tablespoon water. Trick is to try and keep as many white grains whole as possible as they attack the acid.

I am so happy can do more now. Hope this continues to work well and breathing!
