Length of hospital stay

Hi just wondering from day of operation how long did you stay in hospital for and for what reasons if longer than the standard night

I was quite lucky, I was allowed home just after lunchtime the next day. There was another woman on my ward who had the bypass the day before me and was told she had to stay in until at least the day after me, because she basically refused to get up and moving about (I was up and walking around the ward the same day of my surgery).

She called for the surgeon at one point, claiming that something must have gone wrong in surgery because she was in so much pain. When the surgeon reassured her that the operation had gone well, she asked him to open her up again and check that everything was still okay.
I understand she must have been in pain, but I feel she may have been overreacting a tad.

The surgeon actually came in as I was wandering around (albeit very slowly ), and stated how fantastic it was that I was up and moving and that, if everything is still okay after I'd been monitored overnight, I can go home tomorrow!

So, I think the best suggestion I can give anyone is, as soon as you feel comfortable, get moving! It doesn't have to be much, I just wandered up and down the corridor outside the ward a few times, but if the surgeon and nurses see you moving about, and your vitals are all stable, you'll be going home sooner rather than later.

Yeah, hospitals aren't the nicest places. Don't want to be in there any longer than you need to be

My op was postponed from the 21st until the 22nd Nov so I stayed in an extra night but I only stayed in for 1 night after my op

Hi although I had to spend the night in the HDU (planned) I was allowed home the next day as everything had gone well and I did loads of laps of the ward. So mrssimpkin 's advice is spot on. Home is the best place to recover if that is possible.

Definitely not! Add to that I'm a bit restless when I'm bored (which I'm sure I'll be there...), I'll be walking a lot - I hope!

I think its down to the hospital, I had a bypass at University College London Hospital and stayed in for 2 nights

Yes I could have gone home the next day I was up and about on the same day as my op was only advised not to in case I was ill when I got home because I lived a fair way from our hospital and started with the wind pains which were bloody crippling I might add. xxx

I must leave next day it's my toddlers birthday that day and I cannot miss it . So as long as I feel well enuf I will be leaving regardless of what hospital say even if it's just till that night and return x

I too was at the UCLH & stayed 2 nights. I was up & walking normally with no pain the next morning but couldn't keep anything down, not even a sip of water so they wanted to monitor me an extra night, I was home by midday the day after though

i was in for 5 nights

i was operated on on a friday and seems communication lapsed over the weekend as i wasnt given anything to eat or drink for 2 days and was left with the catheter in which was a bugger trying to walk with it all attached

when they did start giving me stuff i couldnt keep it down and my heart rate and blood pressure were very high due to being in a lot of pain from the one port that ended up being stapled in a crease

I was in 2 nights because I had a surprise hernia and was in a lot of pain. I moved about as much as I could which helped with gas etc but my god, the hernia felt like I'd been kicked in the chest by a horse!

I have a hernia too was found when had camera down but nothing else has been mentioned about it, I wonder if they sort it when I have my surgery

Well a double whammy 2-4-1 op would be a good thing! Maybe ask them about it

Because of hiatus hernia they've decided to give me full bypass as opposed to mini bypass :/ not quite sure how to feel but the hernia was found months ago so would have been nice to have been told months ago about the change of plan
