Loose stools

Hi all I had my surgery at the end of June and if I eat something I that doesn't agree with my new pouch I don't be sick but it makes an extremely fast southernly escape, is this normal? I was expecting to be sick but that does not seem the case! Have actually had a couple of accidents Which has now made me increasingly worried about eating outside my home!
Thanks in advance for any replys

hi,

im the same - i have not actually been sick yet which is what i was expecting, however i have had some rather fast bowel movements..... this only happens when i have eaten granola, and a tiny (i mean tiny) amount of honey hoops things.... (so im guessing it s the honey!) now i dont have either x im very stricked as the thought of this dumping makes me feel ill nevermind going through it! x

Sorry cant help I'm the opposite I vomit but the other end is blocked! My body is a stranger to me at the moment x

I think it works differently for every person, who have had the bypass.

I have the DS and quick exits are to be expected for us. lol

Ladiedevilish you live not that far from me just down the road really.

Rosebun. x

isnt this called a mild form of dumping? allot of people dont vomit with dumping because the food has already gone past the pouch..i will copy what my sheet from the dietitian says about it:

Bowels normally return to normal after the operation, although diarrhoea is not uncommon to start with. This usually settles down as you restart solids. If it does not settle or it returns, look carefully at what you are eating. The most common reason is eating foods high in sugar such as sweets, chocolates, sweet drinks or sugar added to foods,or high in fat such as crisps, snack foods, chips, friend foods, cheese and fatty meats. Make sure you drink extra fluid if you do have diarrhoea until it settles, but avoiding sugary drinks. If your bowel motion become fatty, yellow and difficult to flush this is always due to eating too much fat, which has exceeded the body's ability to absorb it. It will settle if your diet is adjusted.

That is what my form says, i am not saying you arent sticking to the rules, but maybe there is something you are having that your pouch cant handle that you arent aware of .... sending hugs and kisses your way xxxxxx

I tend to have very loose stools now if I eat fruit or drink too much milk. I tend not to go anywhere for an hour after eating anything new just to make sure it's safe. Coffee seems to have this effect in the morning too, if I drink it before I've eaten anything. The iron tablets can also cause loose stools.

I've always put that down to the Lansoprazole. I hope when I get to the end of the three months and can stop using it the diarrhoea will go away.

Chris - I went for a check up last week and my dietician told me the guidelines have changed very recently and I now have to take Lansoprazole for a whole year instead of 3 months! They've said that it is just preventative measures that have increased it. I also have to take 2 a day, which is what I was told after my op in June, yet my hubby had his op in Feb and only had to take 1 a day! All these rules are ever changing - hard to keep up with it all! lol

And as for the stools - well the Lansoprazole definitely hasn't helped loosen mine! If I'm at work I have to check my calendar for the next half an hour incase I've got any meetings as I can be in the loo that long trying to go - or letting it drop! lol
