Morning
Yesterday I had my breakfast & a higher sugar than I should have Biscuit about 30 minutes after this I started to feel very shaky & weird I was at work so decided to check my blood sugar which was sitting at 3 which is very low.. The others did there's & we had all ate the very same thing & theirs were mostly sitting at 5.. I'm wondering if you can help me regarding this háve any of you suffered from this?? Due to having something high in sugar I would have thought my blood sugar would have been high?? or do we Spike high blood sugar then it depletes rapidly?? Any advice would be appreciated I'm nearly 5 months post op
Thanks

Yes this happens to me if I eat high sugar - my specialist said it's because I am diabetic my insulin is used to reacting quickly and I maybe produce too much now and as my body is lighter now it results in a hypo. I have some fruit or something with a little natural sugar so that I don't constantly swing high and low. My dietician said they are noticing this a lot with wls

I'm not a diabetic though .. I'm going to get in touch with my team regarding this I wonder if it's going anything to do with my pcos as this is insulin related .. Thanks for your reply x

It happens quite often after WLS. I am not diabetic but if I eat something higher in sugar the insulin goes crazy and then my blood sugar levels become very low (I have been going down lower than 2 a lot lately). I have to now eat like a diabetic even though I am not. It is a form of dumping and one to be very careful of.

I have reactive hypoglycaemia now, wasn't diabetic etc pre-op, but it's not food related. Just random blood sugar plummets. I carry glucogel or dextrose with me which I take at the first sign of an attack, then have a complex carb to keep it level.

I have hypo's very regularily now, more when I have had something higher in carbs so my sugars plummet too quickly usually at the 1.9-2.2 range... I also have to eat like a diabetic although I do not have high blood sugars anymore just the lows!!

Eating like a diabetic means low carbs and no added sugars.

Also, if it continues have some additional tests run. I developed a condition, called acquired hyperinsulinism, just diagnosed that can be a side effect of this type of surgery. Not a huge deal as long as I treat my body right and eat the proper foods.

and would you believe im still waiting to hear from my team!! hhmm 11k later and they cant even get back to me.
thanks for your replies i shall keep this in mind about eating like a diabetic, your right about everything in moderation but there is a way diabetics should eat in order to keep their blood sugars at a level rate. thanks again x

when i was diagnosed over 12 years ago the term they used when it came to eating was 'balance' ......since my bypass my sugars have been all over the shop but now my background insulin levels are now finally sorted (for the time being) i'm getting back to normality. i hope they get you sorted.

My endocrinologist would disagree about eating everything in moderation. The side effects of this condition are not worth it and if they cannot regulate my blood sugars and keep me from passing out and so forth, then I will lose my licence. If I didn't eat exactly the way my endocrinologist and his dietician have shown me, then my body is in very bad shape.

if you cannot recognize when you are going to have a low you should'nt be driving until you and your team have your sugars sorted .........does your insurance company say its ok for you to drive whilst you cannot control your sugar levels

I have times when I get the shakes for no obvious reason. I can have had breakfast etc let it settle & walked the 5 mins to work & get the shakes so have to eat a cereal bar or protein bar to counteract them. I assume my blood sugar drops as I've used what stored energy I have & my body can't release anymore fast enough to cope with the extra demand. I'm like it now which isn't helping my mood as I struggle to put up ceiling paper in the hall. Frustration, shakes & limited useful assistance makes life very tough. I should stop but want to get it done so I can paint in the evenings this week & the hall at least is done despite our hospital visits to Wales taking every spare minute.
