Just read up on this for you Lynda, & it seems it is connected to the cellulitis you wrote about a few weeks ago. Have copied this from Google xx ;

Lymphatic obstruction is a blockage of the lymph vessels that drain fluid from tissues throughout the body and allow immune cells to travel where they are needed. Lymphatic obstruction may cause lymphedema, which means swelling due to a blockage of the lymph passages.

Causes, incidence, and risk factors

The most common reason for lymphatic obstruction is the removal or enlargement of the lymph nodes.

Causes of lymphatic obstruction include:

Infections with parasites such as filariasis

Injury

Radiation therapy

Skin infections such as cellulitis (more common in obese patients)

Surgery

Tumors

In Western societies, one of the most common causes of lymphedema is removal of the breast (mastectomy) and underarm lymph tissue for breast cancer. This causes lymphedema of the arm in 10 - 15% of patients, because the lymphatic drainage of the arm passes through the armpit (axilla).

Rare forms of lymphedema that are present from birth (congenital) may result from problems in the development of the lymphatic vessels.

Symptoms

The main symptom is persistent (chronic) swelling, usually of the arm or leg.

Signs and tests

The doctor will perform a physical exam and ask questions about your medical history.

The following tests may be done:

CT or MRI scan

Lymphangiography

Lymphoscintigraphy

Treatment

Treatment for lymphedema includes:

Compression (usually with multilayered bandages)

Manual lymph drainage (MLD)

Range of motion exercises

Manual lymph drainage is a light massage therapy technique in which the skin is moved in certain directions based on the structure of the lymphatic system. This helps the lymph fluid drain through the proper channels.

Treatment also includes skin care to prevent injuries, infection, and skin breakdown, as well as light exercise and movement programs. Exercise should be carefully designed by a physical therapist. It should help drainage without leading to swelling, which could make your condition worse.

Wearing compression stockings on the affected area or using a pneumatic compression pump on and off may be helpful. Your doctor and physical therapist will decide which compression methods are best.

Surgery is used in some cases, but it has limited success. The surgeon must have a lot of experience with this type of procedure. You will still need physical therapy after surgery to reduce lymphedema.

Types of surgery include:

Liposuction

Removal of abnormal lymphatic tissue

Transplant of normal lymphatic tissues to areas with abnormal lymphatic drainage (less common)

Rarely, the surgeon will bypass abnormal lymph tissue using vein grafts. These procedures are not usually successful and are often done experimentally.

Expectations (prognosis)

Lymphedema is a chronic disease that usually requires lifelong management. In some cases, lymphedema improves with time. However, some swelling is usually permanent.

Complications

In addition to swelling, the most common complications include:

Chronic wounds and ulcers

Skin breakdown

Hope that helps, sweetie xxx :wave_cry:

thanks twinkle that sounds about right, i have just got over cellulitis as you know but prior to that i had an ulcer on my leg of which i was in hospital for 4 weeks and then distric nurses comming twice a day to dress my wood its heald now but has left a terrible scare.

thanks once again twinkle, i will print yhis and take it back to my doctors to see what she plans to do next.

i really hope it doesnt jepordise my surgery.

Ah sweetie do feel for you I have it and it is worse in one leg than the other. I wa sent for a special scan to confirm that it was odema and it came back that the main issue is that i have incompetant flow back up my legs to the heart which means that it is in the small veins and no the arterys and this is what causes the swelling. I have now been fitted for special stockings and they make such a difference and they are so comfortable because i was measured exactly for the size of my legs. I had to have the scan before I could have these so ask your doc can you have a scan to confirm diagnosis. My legs have gone down sooooo much since wearing my stockings and there are so many different types to choose from xxx good luck

hi magsy it is a pain isnt it your legs are never the same after this horrible thing.

i have already been measured for these stocking and have a pair, i got them when my ulser on my leg was healed, looking back now though i have had cellulites a couple of times my ulser was caused by a mosquito bite in portugel.

the first pair of stockings i had were a high tog,
but these ones i have now dont seem to be as thick so i think i will ask for a higher tog as you get a stronger more secure fit.

i havent had the scan you talk about magsy maybe that will be a good idea just to see what the blockege is,
weather it is in my small vains or my deep vains.

but as i type this i have also been suffering deep vain thrombosis also so maybee it is my deep vains???

i have heard somewhere they can now put a tube like thing in were ever the blockege is to help with blood flow.

thanks for replying magsy as i dont feel on my own knowing someone else has been through the same thing. the post of twinkle was really helpfull its all starting to make sence now.

do you think this will jepordise my surgery????
