Hi guys,

My BMI is 33 and with the pre op diet is likely to go down... will i be refused op?

Already booked op and consultation is only a couple of days before! Already paid over £500!

Read criteria should be over 35 bmi

How much weight do you need to loose? I guess until the consultation it will be hard for anyone to advise. It will be up to the surgeon if he thinks this is the right option for you.

your bmi seems to low for wls, have you got any co morbilities, each surgeon is different tho about a minimum bmi.

BMI 35+ is NICE guidelines, which is what the NHS (should) follow. Private surgeons though have lower guidelines, but I'm not 100% sure if there is a definate cut off point for bypass/band.

If it is worrying you, then call them and ask.

I have certainly read of people with a lower BMI than you who have had a gastric band fitted - all privately I hasten to add, which is I presume what you are doing? I can't imagine your BMI will be too low to have the band, and if you have already paid money up front then no doubt your surgeon is happy with it. To be sure, just phone them though.

I assume to are going private? have you paid £500 for a consulation or as a deposit for the actual surgery? If for the surgery i would guess you would have had to provide the company with some sort of clinical background on yourself including what your bmi is. If this is the case then they would have told you if you are too low for surgery.

NICE guidelines are for the NHS to follow not for private surgery

Good luck

private surgery will take your cash as its a buisiness, shoot me down in flames if u disagree but a low bmi below 35 is not good to have wls unless u have lots of under lying medical issues, thats just my opinion.

Hi nik nak, and welcome to minis, i had my band fitted privately with a bmi of 31, which yes is low but not the lowest its been. When i gave up smoking 9 years ago my weight went up a great deal giving me a bmi of 40 which is morbidly obese, but i went on to lose 3 and a half stone with slimming world but have struggled since then to get any lower, so based on that my surgeon said that he was willing to operate but i suppose every surgeon is different. If you have any questions please ask. julie

Hi Nik Nak!

My BMI is 32 and i'm due to have a band fitted on 25th February. Same story as Julieann above and my whole adult life has been affected with the struggle to lose weight. I'm paying for my surgery privately and yes, i agree that it is a business and is all about profit but i'm grateful for the opportunity to at least have the chance to control my weight once and for all.

Wishing you all the best!!! Go for it!

Hi 1974RACH! 9 days left to go and i'm sooo excited. Can't wait to start the pre-op diet and get things moving at last......I've never had any surgery before and never even been to hospital but at the moment i'm not scared, reading peoples blogs has answered most of the questions i had - BRING IT ON!!!

hi nik nak

can you tell me what agency is doing your gastric band. ive just been told i cant get one as my bmi is 32. im gutted, i constantly struggle with my weight and its impacting on my health. ive heard some surgeons will do it, i just need to know who....im desperate!

Hi Stulambie!

I had a low bmi - 32 and had my band with WGA at Dolan Park near Birmingham. I toally agree that its a profit making business but thank god for that! Without the opportunity to have surgery my weight would have risen and my self esteem would just have dropped. I didn't go into it lightly and i researched the operation pro's and con's for many months previously. Go to google and look up WGA, i hope they will consider you as they did me - best of luck!!!!

Hi ,
I am having mine done privately as i was referred by my G.P as she knows the struggles i have which are life long .

She has notes over the years, when my weight has gone up to 14 stones and down several times and she knows it takes over my life.

My b.m.i is lower than needed but after hearing my story and seeing all my photos over the years he agreed that i would be a good candidate for surgery.

I cant continue the way i am so it must of come across that way to him .

Best of Luck Mia
