Mirena coil problems?

Hi all!!

After reaching my goal over a year ago, I had a Mirena coil fitted.

Since then I have gained a stone.
Always thought that contraception is not related to the weight gain, so didn't put two together...

BUT, for the last two weeks, being on 1000Kcal a day, no carbs, lots of water - haven't lost anything!
So, started thinking...

I have started to put on the weight after the coil was fitted.. And now, the inability to loose weight...

Did anybody else had these problems... I loved the fact that I didn't have any period for 8 months, but the weight gain is NOT fun!

Hmmmm. This is an interesting thread as I have the contraceptive implant and I have been wondering if this will hinder my weight loss? So I hope you don't mind if I add that to your question please? I've tried googling but am not coming up with a definitive answer... x x

Hiya, one of the side effects of the implant is weight gain (think I read somewhere it could be up to 10% gain!!!) I had mine in for a year & I really really struggled to lose anything (I was a year post op). I've now had it removed as I had problems with irregular bleeding & have swapped to the injection... hoping I might start losing again however I think anything that has hormones (so mirena coil included) can affect weight loss x

Hi all
I went to go and have my implant replaced the other day and was told that having this in can increase your appetite. However if we as bypasses don't feel hunger can this still effect our weight loss.
The doctor was adamant not to put another one in and would like me to have the coil instead, but I am not keen on this idea after reading all the side effects.
I have not had my implant replaced as yet and I am due to go back in three weeks.
SO CONFUSED!!!

Sammy,

I'm thinking it might affect us in terms of head hunger rather than actual hunger?!? That could explain why they're concerned?!!? X

I have had the same coil for 4 years and am now 8 weeks post op I have lost 3.5 stone. It doesn't seem to be affecting my weight loss but it maybe because I have had a long time and who knows it could be part of the reason for some of this weight x

Hi
I have had the Mirena coil for some 10 years and always thought it was the cause of my weight gain but after talking to both the gynae consultant and sexual health specialist nurse they agreed that it was not found to be any evidence supporting this. It do however seem to be really common to get to goal and bounce up a bit and then settle.

If the implant/contraception only affects hunger and makes you eat more I'm not concerned about that. Only if there are other reasons linked to weight gain I have no control over. I will add it to my list of questions for my follow up but meanwhile if someone has the answer then I'd be grateful to hear it :) x x

I didn't notice myself eating more in the last 8 months... But just thought that I do not notice as much as I did to what I eat...

ONLY when I started to try and loose the weight, but reducing my calorie intake and not eating carbs (what has worked a treat before, and the weight loss was considerable, even before the bypass), I started to think that Mirena coil might be the reason (with all the hormones in it).

Will keep you posted. Am going to take it out in the next 2 weeks, and will see how I go.

And, I had a normal, non hormonal coil, and never had any problems, except for the heavier periods.

I get head hunger with or without it so don't think it will make a difference!! That is one long battle that I have to keep fighting and I will win :)

I am on my third Mirena coil covering the past 17 years (the current one is staying in for 10 years to get me through the menopause). I have never thought of any connection between the coil and weight gain. The hormone in the Mirena coil is absorbed through the cervix so it would not have the same effect as say taking the contraceptive pill, which has a definite connection with weight gain. I would also be interested in any evidence anyone can come up with.

I have had the Mirena for years and years, and I have never thought of it affecting my weight, just age and bad eating habits making it creep up and up.

I do know that the contraceptive injection, OTOH, was THE culprit for the massive weight gain, the horrendous PMS, the complete loss of libido which nearly broke my marriage, the severe acne, etc, etc... and that no-one at the doctor's had even thought of telling me about the side-effects, I found out quite by accident.

Since the Mirena (for which I was one of the early guinea-pigs), I have never looked back on any of these terrible side-effects, and it also means I don't have to worry about HRT over the next few years, the menopause is sailing on smoothly, so even if it has something to do with weight gain (and tbh, I don't really see how, the dosage of hormones being dispensed is so minute, unlike the massive concentration of it you get with the injection), I wouldn't change that for the world. :)

Good luck. :)

oh god I had the Depo injection and that was instant weight gain. In three months I put on two stone and have never lost it. I was happily following a VLCD and was just coming to the end of it when I had the injection put in. I felt like I literally blew up. I went from feeling amazing to the biggest bloated mess ever... i was trying to diet at the time too!

Not sure on the Mirena Coil...have head both reports on it. My SIL is a Doctor and she said that the hormones are localised so definitely wouldn't have the same effect as the normal pill would have.

Good luck xx

Depo, short for Depo-Provera, that's the one! I had blocked the name out of my consciousness for years! :(

It's horrendous. Also made me psycho lol. My poor boyfriend was on the verge of leaving. Never ever again!! X

Ok, have the damn thing out tomorrow and decided, despite heavier periods and pain during them, to have a normal, non hormonal coil put in.
I think, the non hormonal coil is the only contraceptive out there without all the hormones.

Wish me luck. It can't go on like that!! (Weight wise).
Just makes you want to give up.

Hi I had the depo. Major mistake years ago. Major weight gain plus then when trying for a baby after a year I didn't have a period for over 2 years.
I am on the pill for PCOS and tempted to come off it but now its for reducing facial hair. In a bit of turmoil as it does fix the facial hair, but is this at a cost of being heavier???

Ok, went to the gyn today and have taken it out. Put the copper one instead.

She has asked me if I have put on a lot of weight during pregnancy and if there has been any swelling (yes to both).
What she has said (an older lady with lots of experience): It is not mentioned anywhere, but due to her own experience she does not suggest women who had those problems to put in Mirena coil, since it has the same hormone, being produced during pregnancy. And, if you had those problems then, you are most likely to get it with the Mirena coil. It is not as much as gaining weight, but a massive water retention. Which is impossible to shift.

There it is.

Let's hope, now it is out, my weight loss will be back on track.
