Hi postop i'm having duodenal switch on 28th in Liverpool i realise you had it in America but is there any tips you can give me in anyway whatsoever as i believe experience is worth a lot , did you have many post op problems ?
Hi Angie,
It's somewhat different in the US, but also very much the same. I have several friends in the UK who've had it and most of us have had similar experiences.
Tell me, are you having it done in 1 part or in 2 parts?
I will PM you with the link to a profile I wrote. It will let you know how it went for me. Plus, I'll give you my email addy. You can ask me any questions you like and I can put you in touch with some UK DSers. I can also send you a packet of info. my surgeons & their DS nutritionists give out. It's tailored esp. for DSers. While some of the food may be different, you can get an idea of how much to eat, drink and what vits/minerals to take & when. It also gives you a chart with protein values which is helpful. A good rule of thumb with protein is that each oz. = 7 grams of protein. Since (eventually) you'll need to eat 80-120 grams/protein/day, this will help. Don't worry if it takes you quite a while to get there. It took me over 6 mos. to get to 50 grams/protein/day. I had to drink a protein shake each day for the 1st two years b/c I couldn't eat enough. That's not to say it'll be the same for you. Some people can eat much more quite early on. It's very individual.
What I want to urge you is to use the 'losing' window to its fullest. The DS gives you a large 'losing' window. Stay low sugar. Stay low carb. You can go back and add those when you lose the weight & want the weight loss to slow down & stabilize. But definitely use that window to its utmost.
Also, when postop...walk, walk, walk, & sip, sip, sip. Staying hydrated is much more impt. than eating protein the first month.
Best of luck.
