Need reassurance?

Hello! I have been obsessively reading posts on this site for the past month, but never posted, but I guess now I just need to be reassured by knowledgeable /experienced banders.

I am a week post op band. I have 4 mls in my 10mls band, I dont feel restriction (which is normal).

I am taking on a daily basis - 2 slimfast (with semi skimmed milk), a half can of soup (tomato/chicken which is strained) and sometimes a milky 40 calorie hot chocolate in the evening.

Everything was going dandy, losing a quarter pound daily until the past two days - I have put on 2 and a half pounds.

This is just worried me slightly as I have increased my physical activity (walking) since the op.

Am I putting on weight as I am not eating enough or am I regaining the fluid I possibly lost pre op? I was on a milk diet for two weeks so I was basically starving on less than 600 calories daily.

I am not sure what my calorie intake should be right now on the liquids. And also of course, I was told by my provider dietician not to expect any weightloss until 6 months post op but that sounded a slightly exaggerated amount of time?

I am a bit naive. Thanks in advance!

Hi Loppie and welcome! I am afraid I can't advise you as I am at a similar stage post op but I am sure that our more experience banders will be replying soon.
Take care xx

Hi loppie, and welcome!

I had a very similar experience, I gained weight on three days in one week when I was on liquids. I thought I'd gain loads on mushies if I managed to gain on liquids, but I've been on them over a week and I've lost 6lbs in the last 5 days, so I'm more relaxed now!

I don't know if it's normal and I don't know what caused it, but you're certainly not alone x

That is definitely reassuring (hi!). I think because it's new and i don't know what to expect and of course I'm thinking in my head I've had all this done that it should just be lose lose lose!

Patience is not one i my virtues and that needs to change! :)

Thanks!

It is common to have weight gain for some, post op, especially in these early days. It seems that you're intake is quite minimal so the body will hold on to whatever it has for a start, and it is also common that weight loss will not kick in until you start having fills and often getting back to normal food (although 6 months does seem a bit excessive in all honesty)

Often on liquids they don't tell you to stick to a max calorie intake just to take on what you need (but not to if you don't feel you need it!) follow your providers guidelines and contact them if you're worried, and also look at a bigger picture with weighing.

Measure yourself and not just on scales but also, don't worry at this point, some people do feel restriction at this point, but less so when they are on liquids, when you get into mush and then normal food and really on to band friendly food, then you will notice the difference (another reason why its important not to rush getting fills but giving your body time to adjust and get used to it!)

Thank you very much for the informative response. I just want to 'get going' with it all in the right direction. Am going to increase my soup intake (two separate portions) and see if that makes my body a little happier.

I had been restrictive as I am a bit silly and scared of it not working. Weird, I know. So much is resting on this working out but I just have to relax a bit.

Aiming to walk two miles today so hopefully the increased distance will also help.

:)
