Hello everyone,
My name is Farzana. I'm 25/female. I have just joined this forum. Though i was reading some important threats for last few days. You all seem to be very supportive. So i decided to ask few questions about gastric bypass surgery.

First of all, I have tried so many things to loose weight but nothing worked so far, my menstual cycle is messed up big time from the begining. I am trying to concieve but from fertility clinic the Doc says to loose weight. I am at the moment 105kg and my height is 5'2" only. so that makes my BMI 42. I have to loose about 55kg to be normal weight which is impossible without surgery.

Where can i start from? last time i checked for blood sugar it was 11.2 and i had to go for a blood test for diabetics.

Should i ask my GP about surgery? what about the costs? will the GP help me with costs? I am very confused. My married life is in danger too. please give me some advice, any advice on what should i do?

Hi Farzana, welcome to Mini's :)

Lets see if we can help you through the early stages, first of all do you know what PCT you are under? If not the town you live in would help. I can help you find out what the criteria are for you.

Once you know that, the first step is to speak to your GP. If you meet the criteria then you should be able to get the surgery fully funded by the NHS. It depends on your location though, and there can be a long wait.

Try not to worry, there are enough of us here to help you :)

Hi Shel,
Thankyou very much for the reply. I Live in Tower hamlets borough in London and the criteria says NICE guideline criteria in BOSPA website. Tower HamletsNICE Guidelines criteria

Well that's promising :) NICE criteria are BMI of 40 or above, and having tried many other different weight loss methods. They may want you to have tried medicinal help, like orlistat or reductil, but different PCTs seem to vary on how much history of previous attempts they want to see.

So next step is to go to your GP. Tell him that you have checked your PCT criteria and think you meet it, so would like him to refer you. Depending on the local procedure he might refer you to the surgeon, an obesity specialist, or just apply for the funding himself, but either way he should know what he has to do. If he's never referred anyone before he can find out from the PCT what he has to do.

Thanks again Shel, I have tried different types of diet, excercise, Gym, swiming, yoga and also diff WL pills (like anoretix, xenical and others as well), cyclone diet, cambridge diet etc etc. and even tried to eat only salad but nothing helped. i just can't sleep at night at all, have breathing problem sometimes, have PCOS, checking for diabetics, high blood pressure. Fertility clinic also told me to loose weight, so If i tell all of these to the GP should it be ok or do i need to add anything else?

Hey Gaynor,

How are you? thanks for the reply. I hope i will get great advice and support here from you all.

Hi Farzu,
Just wanted to welcome you to minis, I don't really know anything about funding as I went Private for my Op, But I'm sure shellbell will be able to help you more. and I am sure there will be other people along soon to help you out.
Good luck!

Hi & welcome to our big weight loss family. I had my bypass through the NHS 6 months ago and I had a bit of a wait but it was so worth it. I was referred by my GP to a dietician, was instructed to undergo weight management via pills & diets for 6 months and then I was to referred to the consultant at my local hospital. After I met with him, I was then refered to the surgeon. My surgeon is who applied for my funding. From when I met with the consultant to my surgery was about 7 months, it can be longer or shorter depending on your PCT & your hospital's pathway.

I wish you the best of luck and feel free to ask any questions you like. Also, there are a few members in the London area who might be helpful.

Hello Everyone.
Thankyou very much for all your support. i already started feeling good to be here.

Shel,
I will take an appointment with GP tomorrow. Do i hvae to tell all my problems so the GP can understand what i am going through?

I say Yes! You do! I started my consultation with my GP as a rational lady, but by the end of my 'speech' I was very tearful! I told him exactly how I felt about myself on both a physical and psychological level. I pointed out that he knew I had tried many, many times to lose the weight (all evidenced on my medical records) and was now at my wits' end with it all. I got it. I was only the second patient to have been referred from my surgery.

I would list the whys of why you feel you want WLS. Tell him/her you have researched it some and know that according to the BOSPA site, you meet the NICE criteria and on the face of it, your PCT criteria too. Also list the benefits - i.e. less chance of costing NHS more money in the longer term, better health etc.

Do let us know how you get on.

Hi Farzu - and another WELCOME from me to minis the is a fabulous site and yes EVERYONE is supportive of each other (i wish the world leaders could support each other as we do here). What Shel, Red and everyone else has said is great advice you must tell you GP everything. If you are like me and are prone to forgetting points write them down and then as you discuss each point with your GP you will be sure you have covered all the points you need to know.

Looking forward in getting to know you better and following your journey with us:bliss::bliss:

Thanks Burnetteandred, I think i have to do that too and not by force, i'll start crying once i start telling about my PCOS and how i can't have a baby without loosing weight.

Hello Topsy, Thanks, that was a great advice to write down everything single point because my memory is not sharp enough and i don't want to loose any chance.

If you have tried to lose weight, tell him/her. If you have had Orlistat, done LighterLife or attended weight management clinics, all that should be on your medical records. You may have some co-morbidities too and that can only help your case.

All the very best and keep talking. :hug99:
