Need to make a decision

On whether to have weight loss surgery or not? Ive been thinking about it the last 2 months but still can not make my mind up.
Ive have struggled with my weight for years but i just cannot seem to diet long enough to loose weight. My life seems to be falling apart and i think my weight has alot to do with this. I have no confidence which means i dont have any friends as i dont like going out and socialising as i hate the way i look :(
I dont know what to do its such a big decision but i feel as if need to do something? How did you know that the decison was right to have wls?x

Well not sure about how it will effect you, but I went through all the worries and now I am nearly three months out I wish I had done it years ago!!!

In all honesty, for all the reasons you've just mentioned. You have to ask yourself do you want to spend the rest of your life feeling the way you do ?

You also have to consider all the obesity related health problems that come with age. If you were given an opportunity to prevent them, you'd be daft not to take it. Will you be self funding? Or going for NHS funding ?

Thanks for the replies.. :)
No i dont want to carry on like this ive got no life..I know when i think about how i feel i think im silly for not doing it but then get annoyed with myself because i should be able to do it myself but then i think if i could i would of by now?(sorry this is the little argument i have with myself)
Not sure im 18 so dont know what rules are for nhs

Don't be sorry, I'm sure there are lots of us on here who have had exactly the same argument. I know I have. Im sorry I didn't do it 20 years ago, I'm 41 now. Research all the different types of wls so you may get an idea of what you want. Then go and talk to your GP, see what they say as there may be other things you can try while your thinking about it. If you want an NHS referral, the whole process often takes quite a long time. So it's best to get the ball rolling ASAP. If that's what your GP advises.

Hi little fairy why don't u make an appointment with ur gp and just av a chat about ur options x

i went to see the gp to see if i could have some tablets or something or what he could do he reccommended i go and see a dietician this was about 3 weeks ago

Uuummm some GP's are really resistant to WLS so you really do have to be strong and insistent sometimes. Usually your PCT will insist that you go through some sort of weight management programme, and/or have weight related health issues ie diabetes, sleep apnea etc before referring. Some PCTs don't offer certain types of surgery, I was told that my consultant that he doesn't do anything but bypass on the NHS (no band, sleeve etc) but I don't know about other PCT's. Sounds like you've still got a lot of thinking to do, and you do need to research which type of surgery you'd want. Seeing a dietician is a good start as they really will help you with options. For me having the surgery was the best decision I've ever made, and also wish I'd done it years ago (I am 42 too), I umm'd & ahh'd about it for ages thinking that I should be able to lose the weight myself, but then had to admit that I couldn't and needed help. Good luck with your journey lovely, hopefully the advice and support you'll find here will help you with your decision. Xxx

Hello:)

I think go to ur doctor and talk to her she/he might give u some advice and also could forward u on to pct where they make the decion weather u can get funding for band.

There no harm in trying!!! I got turn down twice:-(
So in the end went private with thg

I had the same argument with my self like u had i try to justfield why i wont need it and that if i really wanted to i could do it without wls
am 29 and had my band fitted 25/8/12
But what it all boiled down to is ammitting I needed help and that the weight was not coming off.
As in last 5 years I've tryed every diet known to man with no joy.
So I had a band and so far so good I've lost 1stone 1lb in just under 3weeks and so pleased.

And it u come up with that the diet is for u then brill or if u come up with surgery for u brill but it's ur choice and nonthink to be ashamed of.

It your journey and i really do wish u the best.

If u need any other info so want any question

Lisa x

Yep just go for whatever is offered try everything you are only 18 and your whole life ahead of you wish I could have had my bypass or even just help years ago brfore getting to that point. Accept any help given, use it to your favour. xx good luck. Where you from?? x

Hi hune I so know where u r coming from that could be me
5 years ago I have Just taken the plunge to go private for a sleeve ive lost the weightso many times bit always put it back on. Doc said I am not heavy enough my bmi is 43 and no morbidities am i am iny
50s gettimg knee and joint pain cant go into old age like this. And thought I Have got to do something.about it that will work. So Did my research gp was not helpful. Am saving up and having the op in jan. Think Long and hará about what you want to achieve and how u want it done. Only you can make that decisión

It took me over 7 years to finally go ahead with having surgery. During that time I researched it so much, the options, the choices, I tried everything else inbetween times, including lighterlife and various things, I saw my weight drop by almost 7 stone, to putting it all back on and some.

One of my fears is in relation to anaesthetic so it was always the factor in the end which stopped me going ahead with surgery, but, one of the things I have learned is that we have to be in the right place, in the right mindset to know that the decision is the right one and it is important that you take the time to make sure it is the right decision for you.

I am now 3 weeks post band surgery. And I wish that I'd had it done earlier. But also, having had all of the struggles I've had over those past 7 years since first looking into it, I know that having it now, was done at the right time. I was fully armed with all of the info that I needed and I know it was the right decision for me.

It could have been that it was several years ago, but, for whatever reasons I wasn't in that right mindset to know that it was the right but also the best decision, but during that time, I did an awful lot of research and tried a whole host of things in the meantime. Ultimately, I can lose weight, but I cannot maintain that loss, and ultimately, I've had the surgery I first thought about 7 years ago. Yes it would have been better had I been able to have it done earlier, but, it also wasn't the time for me, or perhaps the right decision I was able to make at the time.

Thankyou for all replies :). I'm going to do lots of research I don't have any other conditions other than being overweight I'm 16 stone so not sure what procedure would be best for me.. My mum would rather I haad the gastric balloon but that wouldn't be enough weigh to loose.. I want to do something but scared incase I regret it too :( has anyone had this done at the same age as me if so how did u find it x

I keep telling myself that i need to do this.. end up reasearching and dont know where to start? I will go private if i have this donex

Hello little fairy,
Im a month post op after having a gastric band. How you describe how you feel could also be me! Im almost 40 and didn't think about it for very long but knew I needed something to control the amount I eat. I considered the balloon but was honest with myself and knew that once it was removed, i'd more than likely put it back on again!
I can really eat huge amounts, so the band is for me! I've done every diet available, sometimes successful sometimes not, and reached a point where i'm on anti-depressants and my confidence has disappeared. I know I need help, i'm very lucky to have a wonderful partner who paid for it, but as young as you are, i'd say go for it. Don't spend your life yo yo dieting or struggling, have the surgery that is right for you and have control of it now!
I wish you all the best on your weight loss journey.

I'm 15 st now and having balloon and been told I can lose upto 6st! I just want to feel less like a bubble but I've had a child so it's even worse! Drs wouldn't help me even tho my BMIis 40 and I'm 5ft, I got up to 17st at my largest but thankfully lost that somehow! I'm looking forward to working hard with the balloon so I don't feel it's so easy I want to do it and get healthy with the gym! When I went drs he just prescribed me pills that wouldn't let me digest fat and
Would be very messy! Im payin privately anyway, I got myself in this mess I'll get out of it! A lot of ppl don't agre with nhs finding who I know too! And some would disagree with what I'm even doing privately! My partner and mum are against it, luckily my dad offered and bought up weightloss surgery to me!! My aunt had bypass on nhs was 30st went down to 12 in just over a year and is now apparently cheating it and has put it mostly all back on so I've been told so whatever weightloss you decide to do it seems you can cheat!! Xxx

Hi

Im 25, 5ft 3 and in the preop stage going to see consultant next week for my weightloss target meeting.

Ive been thinking about it for the last two years, as always seem to loose 2 stone and then put it back on, never been heavier then 15 stone untill now, hitting nearly 17 stone when i requested my gp refer me. My gp has actually had a bypass himself so was quite understanding towards the situation.

Ive always thought of having it done then found an excuse to why i shouldnt or dont need it. But now ive got
To the point where ive realised that i cant keep the weight off myself and need help.

I was having really high blood pressure and chest pain, ive got asthma, sleep apnoea and an underactive thyroid. And just thought to myself if i dont do somethig about my weight now, then i might not be around by the time im 30.

I know at least three people that have had a band/bypass and not one of them has regretted it.

So i know its going to be the right decision for me. Just hope i have met my target weight (currently on an all inclusive holiday and panicking a little that i have put the weight ive lost back on lol)
