Hi I first ever got referred to the weight management team in Northumberland. And had to attend a weight management group every week and loose weight in this time to get my referral, due to work commitments I could not attend every week so lost my referral,
So 3 years on I have went back to my doctor and asked could I be referred to Mr Small at Sunderland as my work is mostly based around this area.
To my amazement she said she would ask the doctors surgery team leader who makes decisions on referrals and he said YES.

So my referral has gone to Mr Small at Sunderland.
Anyone know what will happen next as Sunderland referrals work a lot different to the Northumberland ones.
I have not been told be my doctor to go away and loose weight or jeep a diary or anything.

I have tried loosing weight for years and no matter what diet I done and stuck to I stayed the same weight, which my doctor thought was due to to many diets, my metabolism didn't no where it was or what I'd was doing with food anymore.

Any help greatly accepted.

I had my bypass at Sunderland last August, my journey to surgery was a bit longer than the norm but the first step is they will get you in to a group seminar where everything is explained and if you want to proceed you'll get an appointment to see a dietician and a member of the surgical team who will talk specifics with you, you'll get a target weigh loss to hit, its not that much, and then if you achieve by your next appointment they will be keen to refer you for MDT to get the funding approved, from there its only a few months till you'll get a date hopefully.

Don't be surprised if its not Mr Small though, there are about 6 surgeons there now I think and they all have good reputations, I had my operation with Mr Mahawar, but have met Mr Shroeder and Mr Carr at appointments and there are all really easy to talk to.

There is a member on her Lollyowen who just had her operation a couple of weeks ago at Sunderland it might be worth searching out her diary which will be more recent.

Sorry for the long reply just trying to help

Hi huni my journey with Sunderland was my gp referral went off 19th January 2015 I got appointment through for seminar in May I opted in on seminar night I had appointment with bariatric nurse and dietician in July was given weight loss target to meet I moved onto tier 3 group sessions in September and October met my target at the final group session met with consultant in November had endoscopy in December and operation was 20th January 2016
I know it seems like a long time 12 months from referral to operation but in honesty it went quite quickly, I was lucky didn't need to take part in sleep study or need to meet with psychology dept
Best of luck in the process keep us informed of how you are getting on, Lolly Xx

Hi
My gp referred me in oct 2014, seminar in dec 14. I opt in on the night but the option didnt seem to go through so I got a letter asking if I was still interested. Got an appointment to see the dietician and baratric nurse, weight loss target given, nxt appointment with bariatric nurse weightloss more than met. Went to mdt Mr Schroeder wanted me referred to the diabetic specialist who I went to see on June last year everything went well I discovered I have a vit d deficiency got that sorted with medication. I was expecting another appointment 3 - 4 months later but I didnt hear anything so I phoned on november to see what was happening the bariatric nurse said she was going to refer me to the mdt again as I had seen the diabetic specialist as requested. She couldnt understand why the referral back had taken so long. Still didnt hear anything so I phoned again in January 16. The referral back hadnt been made in november 15. It has now tho got an appointment for end feb. So back on track again.
