Newbie and lost... :-(

Hi,
There is such a wealth of info that I am at a loss to choose what is right for me?!
I def want the sleeve or wrap but unsure about travelling abroad tho it is twice as cheap?!
Unfortunately my PCT is "brassic" (GP words not mine) so got to research/book and fund it myself....
Anyone really pleased with surgeon/hospital and cost plz recommend here!
Thanks

Choose a surgery that reflects you're eating habits not necessary your budget, save more to get the one that you need.

I'm a firm believer in you get what you pay for, I chose my surgeon carefully, the cost was not a factor.

Just because your PCT is brassic is not a reason to refuse funding. If you meet the NICE criteria you have the right to go through an appeals process, it won't help you get up the waiting list quicker but your GP should tell you what the process is

Has your gp surgery even tried appling for you to see if u fit the criteria??? Your gp surgery ( if its like mine, sorry dont know where u r from) doesnt know what is in the pct purse ( so to speak) for the gp to say no you gotta fund it yourself doesnt seem right , the least he/she can do is apply and see how you get on and for you get it in writing whether they can fund you and not on the gp's say so. Least if its in black and white you know where you stand 100% and not 2nd guess your gp's decicion ( hope that makes sense) Wishing you all the best - BD. x x

Lush121 is right. You still have the right to apply for NHS funding, if you meet the PCT funding criteria. Also your GP should be supporting your application, not trying to put you off. If I were you, go and see another GP at the practice and tell (don't ask) them that you want to apply for NHS bariatric surgery funding.

Thank you girls! I have had my GP do a referral letter for funding. Haven't heard yet but still decided to meet with Dr Ammori today. I am still angry that PCT's across the CPU.try do.tt see the importance of prevention. Spend now so you don't end up spending 10 times saucy IM a decade but hey...I value my health both physical and mental so I'll pay as even the appeal don't look like it's going to get me anywhere?!
Thanks again girls, don't feel so alone :)

Hiya, I've been through what you are going through now, it really doesn't seem fair! I started on my journey with a BMI of 48 and my GP referred me to weight management at hospital as the pct wanted proof of weightloss over a set time. At the start they promised me a gastric band, perfect candidate BMI over 40 with high BP, PCOS , Pre diabetic, also had discs out of my back, so I followed all the path they set me, tried oralistat also, attended pdychology did CBT , reduced my BMI to 43 then 18 months later, they said my case is knocked back as I HAVE to be diabetic or have a BMI of 50+
The pct changed the criteria in my area and I won't get any help unless I increase my weight!!! I appealed but knocked back again. I was heartbroken. :( spent 3 years in total under them!!!
I decided to get a loan (hubby doing) and do it myself, saw my consultant and dietician and they went through everything with me and suited the band to my needs. (My problem is portion size and eating too quickly). I feel really let down by my pct, since then I've even had a knee op for arthritis all in line with my weight, that prob cost them just as much!!!
My advice is, try again, your pct may not be as strict. Don't give up yet, always appeal you may be lucky. If not make an appointment to see one of the private clients, most first appointments are free and there is no harm finding out. I have mine booked for 22nd, can't wait now. Good luck hon, you are not alone xxx

Thank you...loved reading ur story which unfortunately is very unfair like mine...my PCT has also put their criteria a up so basically unless u r about to die shortly they won't help you...I have had a consult with Pf Ammori in Manchester. Like you, I am going to go private as I value my health even if the medical core (whose job it is to care for our health) doesn't!! Am surprised u'v been recommended a band as Pf Ammori told me studies show bands don't work on PCOS patients? I am going for the plication or wrap which is like the sleeve without cutting stomach away. Best of luck n wish you all the best ...I too can't wait to start my new journey but gotta save a bit longer first. Thinking of 7th Dec for mine ?! Will see :)

Great, glad you've gone ahead yourself. It's going to be worth it in the end. I just think I've wasted 3 years of my life, should have done it sooner, not bothered with weight management at all! The doctors and nurses were so kind but their hands are tied too. It's a postcode lottery now and I think if you are up north you have less chance for funding. My surgeon doesn't do the sleeve or wrap, only offers the band, bypass or switch. Think it's relatively new op, so I'll be interested to see how you get on, I believe it's really good. I wanted the band as want to lose slowly and it looks like natural weightloss, as not telling anyone in work, I also need to be back to work very quickly so have to go for a short recovery period. I'm looking to lose around 6 stone if possible which he said is achievable if I work hard at it, on average its around 4-5 stone in 12 months, but i think the fact I'm paying will make me work my hardest to get to goal!!! Good luck, and keep me informed of your journey, love to hear how you get on xxx

I will do and hope u too keep me posted. We all have to get the OP that suits us and I agree with you when it comes to the cost n hard work...don't wanna waste the money by not putting the effort it tho the fact that we had to do our own research and fight for what we need makes us stronger and more determined I guess. I do wish you all the best. Looking forward to hearing from you soon x

No probs, tried to send you a friend request but on my phone it won't work! When I go on laptop later I'll try again. Not sure if you have to have 50 posts thou. Have you tried my fitness pal? It's really good for logging your food intake, and you can add friends on that too. Have to keep track on mine as on Pre-op diet, and I'm a devil for putting things in my mouth and not taking notice lol! X

Will look into fitness pal and adding friends, didn't know I could do that here?! Not a tech wizard as you can see lol....haven't had details of pre OP diet....Mary will email everything to me so it saves me another trip up Manchester! Long way from warwickshire. Pf Ammori suggested it so I thought it was lovely of him to spare us a trip. What does pre OP diet consist of? Already told h I did.t let milk or protein shakes to which he said "that's fine- we want you to eat normal food just low fat, low Cal ) but it's still vague for me...lol

Hey the diet at Spire Manchester is low carb and low fat - lots of protein and veg, fruit and low fat yoghurt - which is good practice for after your op! I found it ok to do and certainly better than the diet shake option which I was initially going to do. I'm sure you'll be fine on it. If you got the Spire green booklet at your consultation it's on Page 25/26. xx
