Newbie- band consultation booked! Help needed pls

Hi there,
Looks like a very helpful site, so i thought i would just ask if any one can tell me what to say to my non understanding GP, as i have a private appointment in Derby for a Gastric band consultation, but they need a GP Referal letter before they can proceed with the op. Does everyone who is going private need this letter? Why? What shall i say?

Sorry for all questions....really could use any help/advice please.

Thanks so much......

Hi Sm,and :welcome2:to mini's ,if you feel your gp knows enough about the weight issues you have then ask him/her outright. Do you know the criteria for your area regarding funding?? Maybe you could also ask for referal for nhs funding if you fit the pct criteria. If not and you're willing to pay for your op then your gp should'nt have any problems doing this as long as he/she feels it would be worth while for you. Good luck and let us know how you get on. xxGaynorxx

Hi there, I went private and did not require a GP letter - only one from my Psych as she is responsible for managing my Bipolar disorder which is my only illness other than being obese.
If your GP does not prove to be helpful, could you see someone else in the Practice that might be more supportive?
Best of luck.

???????? if your paying private why would you need a gp referal letter ? people some times go private as there gp is anti wls, am i reading this right a gp can stop a private wls op ?

I FOUND THIS ON THE BOSPA WEBSITE

Referral

Obesity surgery is not to be entered into lightly. It requires a considerable degree of commitment on your part and the skills of a specialist in obesity surgery (also known as a bariatric surgeon). However, if you think that surgery could be a good option for you, the next step is to discuss it with your GP. They will make arrangements for you to see a bariatric surgeon. Be patient because your GP may know less about this treatment than you do, as it is not yet widely available in the UK!
A GP referral should be provided whether you are seeking surgery as an NHS patient, or privately.
Some surgeons provide a referral questionnaire for GPs in their area to help identify the patients for whom this surgery would be most beneficial. Click here to download the BOSPA referral questionnaire.
To view the questionnaire your will need Acrobat reader. If you do not have this already installed on your computer, click here to downloaded it free of charge.

Thank you everone so much for your time and helpful information....
We will have to see what the gumpy GP has to say tomorrow...thought i would get the appointment over sooner rather than later incase he isn't very co operative! Gives me chance to work something else out.

Thanks again and i will let you know how i get on.

Has anyone else had their op by Paul Leeder in Derby? (Nuffield)

I am a private patient having my Surgery with Proff Amouri at Spire hospitals and I had to have a ref letter of my Doctor.
Just go to your doctor and tell him/her that you are wanting to be referred for WLS, tell doctor all about your journey for e.g all the slimming clubs you may have joined, slimming tablets, weight management clinics you may have attended etc. Then go on to say why you want surgery and how you feel it would benefit your health for e.g do you have any Diabetes. Poly cistic ovarys, heart probs, walking probs, anything at all that you can think of. Tell Doc you have done your research and have thought seriously over a long period of time and really convince him/her you are serious.
Goodluck

I'm paying for mine and when researching who to have op with, went for the company who did not require a letter from my GP (I'm having my band done with Hospital Group at Dolan Park) not because I don't want them to know about the surgery, just that I didn't want the delay of having to go via them....that aside, I'm paying so it's my business

HG do however write to your GP afterwards to advise them that you have had the surgery.

Hi Red
You and me are practically identical in that we have the same BMI, same near enough surgery dates and the same weight to lose. We can spear each other on hun. Goodluck incase I dont get the chance to say as I go in on the Saturday 2 days before you. x

Hi Jayne, oooh yes we do crikey :D

I chose 25th May as it's my Dad's birthday on 24th and wanted to be able to see him on the day, and my Son will be mid way through doing GCSE exams and off school for that week (I didn't want to have him stressing about me in hospital and doing exams)...otherwise, I could have had it done sooner

I'm sure we'll be on here loads more before the event, but just incase...I wish you good luck...especially with the pre op diet.

Yxx
