Newbie seeking advice after gastric by pass

Hi
I used this forum when going through my weight loss journey previously, found it useful then and I’m hoping someone can help now.

I had my gastric bypass at Sunderland under the NHS jan 2015. I was 32 stone at my heaviest. With the requirement of losing weight first and then the op I have managed to lose 12 stone. In this time I have had 2 pregnancies with the first being born April 2016 and second born 6 weeks ago. Other than the pregnancies, I have had no issues with bypass other than not being able to pass stools without taking dulcolax liquid.

I have started to think of any revision surgeries that could help me lose more and possible look into the problems regarding toilet as if I go qiluite long without going to the toilet (like a week before taking medicine) I put a lot of weight on. I can eat a good amount portion sizes but sugar in large amount can be me poorly still for half hour or so. I have been putting on and losing a stone since one year after surgery and I just feel stuck now at 20stone it’s still too much. Never wanted to me a skinny Minnie, but they thought I’d get down to 14stone and it hasn’t happened. Tried the slimming world aswell.

Can anyone tell me if there are other options? Would my doctors help? Or would it need to be private? Just want an idea before I speak to doctor really.

Thanks for reading x

Hi and welcome

Congratulations on your babies :)
I’m only 4 weeks post op and really can’t help with this. But it is a fabulous forum I’m sure someone will maybe offer some advice to you

As for you toilet problem I too since Bypass have been dreadful. Think this is a common issue for us unfortunately. But you could ask GP about all the concerns you are having they may refer you back to the team at Sunderland

Xx

Hello, welcome back and congratulations on becoming a mum times two.

Twelve stone is a phenomenal amount of weight to lose and you've done really well to maintain it.

There are options for revision post bypass but I would suggest talking to your gp first and maybe get a referral back to the team at Sunderland. There might be support in terms of dietary advice they can help you with.

You might be in for a bit of a wait but your gp's buy in would be the first step. Good luck x

Thank you. Yes I have an appointment next Monday to speak to them. When Sunderland discharged me they didn’t seem bothered about that issue. He just said if that’s what it takes keep using it but surely it’s not a life long solution?!
It seems like more procedures have come along in recent times so more wondered what way people go so I had some idea when speaking to doctor. I got advice off dietician with attempts to help it but was more the obvious drink more water.
Enjoy on your journeys. X

Congratulations on the babies and weight loss, that's amazing.

I can understand your frustration, your body has been through a lot so I'm sure that contributes to the weight loss slowing down.

In regards to your previous op, it is likely that you have stretched your stomach back to normal functionality which is always a risk with the bypass.
I spoke with my surgeon before deciding on my gastric band about the aftercare of the bypass mainly for curiosity and asked what happens if you stretch your stomach back and he advised that a lot of private WLS patients are there because the NHS and specialists are reluctant to give further weight loss assistance to people who have already had surgery. This is probably to do with budgetting etc but he also said it is the reason the NHS rarely offer gastric band surgery on NHS, as it has an increased overall cost to the NHS with aftercare, tightening, adjustments etc. This doesn't necessarily mean the NHS wont offer something. As Mazza said, it might just be dietary guidance you need and the GP is definitly the starting post. Good Luck :)
