NHS - Dr won't refer

Hi, can anyone give me any advice please? I asked my doctor to refer me for possible weightloss surgery - he says no - he doesn't agree with it, and there is no reason for me not to do this by myself!!! - I am 41, a BMI of 46 and have been fat since childhood! - what can I do apart from raise the cash and pay through the nose privately???

:wave_cry:

Go to another Doctor, they can't refuse you really as its down to the surgeon whether you should have the surgery or not. You'll get there just fight on, there are many on here who do and get success. Good Luck xxx Laura

Hi Lola. First of all check out the BOSPA site to see if you fit your PCT's criteria. If you do you have right to surgery despite what your doctor thinks. Maybe you can see a different doctor at your practice who will refer you. Which PCT to you come under? xx

you can complain to you ptc saying just what doctor has said or try to do a letter to your doctor as he may have just refused you to see if you are serious about having weightloss surgery.i asked evrey time i went to doctore but still took diabetic specialist before my doctor put me forward.some old school doctors see it as not a nesesaty but we know it is ...jeff

i seen 4 gp's before i got my referal, women gp's seem more likley to refere, book another appointment with a different gp in your practice x

:party0011:Hi and welcome!:party0011:
Sadly, this happens quite often. Does your doctor's surgery have more than one GP? If so make an appointment with one of the others, if not then you may need to change surgery.

I know other people have made an initial private consult with a weight loss surgery (WLS) team and they have applied for the funding from the PCT. There are many hurdles to jump over on the road to WLS but it is worth so don't give up!

Hugs to you

Lx

bloody annoys me this, it's as if they're personally liable for what the NHS will or won't spend on you, as the others said, check the BOSPA site, print off the guidelines and show your gp, MOST ARE IGNORANT to the benefits of WLS, if still no joy, as again already said, swap gp's, or change to another practice, good luck!! ;)

I have read similar in the forum and it really annoys me. More often than not it come from Gp's that have never experienced a weight problem.

You have been given good advise about changing GP's, if that is not an option if you are under another consultant they can refer you.

Fortunatley my GP is great, but if she hadn't been my rheumatologist would of done the referral.

There is a chance that your BMI isn't high enough to fall within your Nice guidelines and your GP knows this.

You have to check with your PCT and if you do fall within their guidelines then print them off and take it back to your GP, or as others have said try another GP.

I went through all of our at my practice before a specialist wrote to them and told them that they had to refer me.

Fight for it honey.

Thanks Guys!!

Just got back from seeing the Main GP in the practice - and he has agreed to refer me for funding - however, before hand, I must see a professional Dietican at the hospital - and then visit an Obeisity group here in medway called 'tipping the balance' - they will then decide if surgery is needed - I also mis-calculated my BMI... it is actually 50.3!!!! - SURELY I must be eligiable with that BMI???

I had the same issue with the dr I went to first, she had a real look of disgust on her face and I ended up going home in tears. I left it for a couple of months before trying the other dr and I'm so glad I did, the difference was amazing. I'm happy for you that you have found a dr who is taking you seriously. Good luck with your journey x

fantastic new hun just do as the Doctor asks and never give up keep fighting all the way. I did as my doc said no at first and put me through the system of weight loss managment, weight loss tablets and when that failed he refered me and i am now 2 weeks post op and looking forward to the rest of my life.....it is worth the fight hun i promise. xxx

So glad you found a good doctor - keep going... :)
