No malabsorption?

Trying to focus on future
Hello everyone. Some of you may know I am a struggler due to a post I have on the six month's surgiversary thread.

During my last visit to the hospital I was told that my surgery does not cause any "malabsorption" and I will be absorbing every calorie I eat.

Now, at the time I was unable to ask questions - my mind was in a whirl - but now I am confused.

Has anyone else been told this? Because the main reason I chose the RNY was BECAUSE of the restrictions involved,....

I hope someone can throw some light on this :wave_cry:

who was it that told you that? was it the surgeon?

If you have had a gastric bypass then your surgery HAS to cause malabsorption

Are you due to go back again? If not maybe you could ring and ask for a better explanation.

Hope you get some answers x

Thanks so much for replying :)

Yes it was one of the surgeons..... and my husband was with me - we are totally confused

Im confused to, Id be asking for another appointment to go and ask him what he meant.

Also ( a bit gross, so apologies in advance) have you tried eating fatty foods and then seeing how it affects you on the toilet? If I overindulge in fatty foods then my poo's are greasy.

no probs to speak of actually - don't have response to any foods really.....

That's like me Sue, no responses to food...

so what was the point of us going through all the trauma? :(

I have chronic malabsorption, and don't have any problems with high fat foods, so the two aren't always linked ;)

Sounds like he had your surgery type mixed up. Wouldn't be the first time that happened to one of our members!

Sue after losing your weight how has your health changed? Are you more energetic, able to walk further without being tired?

Seriously, i'm just under 5 stone down and i work full days now as opposed to shorter days, i can and do walk for miles, i am physically in the best shape i've been for over 20 years....

Maybe if you can remember how dragged down you felt pre op this will help with how negative you feel towards your surgery...

I hope you find the answers you seek soon and get back on track,

Best wishes xx

Well I did feel like that last summer (2010). I had lost 5 stone and felt much better. Looked slimmer than I had in years.

Then I had the knee op and was on crutches etc for 12 weeks. I am supposed to be having a knee replacement next month but am going to put it off cos I cannot face being laid up again for 3 months.

I have now put on a stone since November. I am managing to work part time but get exhausted. Depression is back and I am frightened for the future again. Seeing the scales go upwards is extremely scary when last year I thought my problems were over, weight wise.

I was told that because we have lost a big section of intestine, that therefore we missed out on an element of the absorption process? Thought that was why we have to take vitamins, calcium and iron etc?
Wouldn't surprise me if they were confusing you with a bander patient. On my day of discharge the ward nurse was removing my wound covers with a puzzled look on her face, i asked what was up and she said "i can't find your port" - i replied that was because i'd had a bypass. Scary thing was she had been treating me during my stay !

thanks Jayne

but did this mean non-absorption of some calories also? I always thought it did - in some small way - and I am wondering now whether my op is different in some way
