is it up to the nurse or the surgeon to say yes to the opp the nurse and dietion say i should be ok but is the surgeon for the final say, and what does the surgeon ask you on the first meeting help please lol xx

Hi,
mine was a very swift meeting with him, sat in the waiting area for 1 hour and when I finally saw him it was for a total of 2 1/2 mins.
All he asked me was... what have you done to lose your weight so far..answer..changed some of my food choices and portion sizes and was then told I would have an endoscopy in around four months ... bye... and that was it, I was quite shocked actually and came out of the room thinking .. what was that all about.
yours may be different but I felt a little deflated as I was so looking forward to this meeting and hoping to have a few questions answered but never had the chance.

I had an hour's consultation with my surgeon, Mr Baker and he was fantastic. He went over all aspects of the various operations available and went through my present eating habits in great detail. He was fantastic. When I was having problems he suggested, via his secretary, that I have a double appointment with him to go over everything and to write down any questions that I needed to ask him. That appointment lasted an hour and a half the result of that one was when it was decided that I should have the gastric band removed and have a bypass performed instead.
It just goes to show that there are major differences in Surgeons depending, I suppose, on their workload and whether you are paying privately or going the NHS route. It is all such a lottery isn't it?

hi what is mdt the nurse seams to think ill be ok as i have a lot of medical condtions ie arthrites high blood presure

It all depends on the individual case.
At Sunderland, the nurse asked me what my preference was - bypass or sleeve etc. She agreed bypass would be best. Generally, the Surgeon will base the decision on results of any additional tests or counselling that you may need. My tests came back negative (sleep apnea) but psych said no to bypass and recommended balloon in first instance. This overrode the MDT's earlier agreement in May to a bypass. MDT agreed balloon. I still intend to go for the bypass but it will take me longer...

Mdt is made up of the surgeons, nurses, dietician, counsellor etc. they will discuss the benefits of u having surgery and what ur next steps are.
Honestly don't worry u will be fine, six months sounds long but believe me it isn't.
U can ring Kim ( out nurse) and she will reassure u, also I visited my GP last week and I haven't seen him in ages and he was missing me lol. He told me that my surgeon has been sending him letters and progress reports that they are over the moon with me an are excited to see how well my surgery will work out. Which am chuffed at.
If u have any questions then just ask someone on here will always help also don't be afraid to ring the team at SRH they are very good and sweet.

hi im not sure i could make it tonight as my back has gon again, but i will try to get to these meetings, see i did not ask any thing as all i wanted to do was get it over with i was so nervus at first but then me back started yes trust me so im still not any wise'er lol thanks everyone for your help i need it as i dont no a lot xx

thanks for that ill let you no in a few weeks i hope but not geting my hopes up with some tales i have heard on here, been told yes then no and been put back 6 n 7 times its doing me in lol but will keep going xx

i also saw Mr Schroder and lets say his bedside manner is somewhat lacking, i also waited over an hour for 1 5 minute chat which he spent most of it in the doorway trying to leave. i consider myself to be quite a confident person but he left me feeling quite deflated and i didnt ask half of the questions that i went there to ask.
however despite telling me it would be 2-4 months for endoscopy i only waited 8 weeks so that was good, Mr Balpuri did my endoscopy and told me then that i would be put on the list for surgery, i rang the hospital switchboard today and asked to be put through to mr Bapuri's secretary as i wanted to check that i had been put on the list. I ended up speaking to Mr Mahawa's secretary and she was lovely and very helpful. she informed me that i had been put on the waiting list, she also told me that the waiting time has significantly reduced to approx 3 months so i am expecting a date for surgery hopefully in December - im not sure im looking forward to pureed Turkey but beggars cant be choosers as they say and this journey has been long enough.

The final decision is made by the surgeon taking into account what you would like and whether its best option given your eating pattern.
There is also the matter of your current health both mentally/physically and how surgery will affect you in long term.
Once you get date you will attend pre op assessment before surgery and to avoid any possible cancellation you should ensure that you have not gained weight and that you have had all tests that may have been required (eg sleep studies if needed) treatment for poor or un-controlled blood pressure/asthma so that you are at the best possible fitness for surgery. It would also be useful if you can check with your GP if any tests were mentioned in the hospital letters to him/her and also get GP to check your blood pressure/peak flow (asthma) and do an ECG and listen to heart to rule out any heart problems. By getting checked out early it will ensure you are adequately treated/controlled long before you get a surgery date and it will be one less thing to worry about.
