Following on from a lot of discussions on the subject.. the pre-op diet contain foods high in saccharin which leaves a nasty taste in your mouth but is also a laxative... something I have discovered first hand.:( There was nothing in the literature about that.. the only good thing is I have constipation to look forward to post-op..my bowels wont know if they are coming or going. :sigh:

Lots of sugar free mints have warnings about the laxative effect :( Not a good thing if you eat the whole packet whilst on the bus :D

I guess there will be rush of toilet paper after reading this little gem !

I know apologies for 'too much info' but I am hoping it will serve as a warning to others before they start the pre-op to stock up on soups, yogurts and toilet paper. Lol

I had to do the pre-op diet for 4 weeks and found the first couple of weeks I was on the toilet ALOT! But it did settle down for the last 2 weeks. I think its a combination of saccharine and all the excess food we've eaten in the past finally clearing out of us. I find post op that I'm going every other day or so, but I am still taking lactulose daily. Thanks for brining this to people attention, toilet roll definitely needs to go on the pre op shopping list!

Oh god I spent the whole pre op diet on the toilet, I was only allowed milk and having that much I developed an intolerance to it. It was horrible but helped the weight loss lol. I changed to soy milk after the op. Benefibre helps both being the too much toilet time and too little. Keeps you more normal. I use that everyday and don't ever have any problems going or going too much now :)

Can I also add.. while I am in the mood for discussing too much information .. that I am piddling like a horse. I know you loose a lot of water in the first few days on any diet but this is ridiculous... :)

Warning:

MALTITOL and XYLITOL are extremely laxative. If you're going for a sugar-free something, watch out for those.
