Can someone please explain to me how I am not losing weight after a fill.

I had my first fill 2 weeks ago today, only 1 ml put in.I was on liquids for 1 day and then sloppies for 1 day , then back to normal.

Until I got the fill I was losing weight every week. I have lost 23lbs since surgery 6 weeks ago.

However since the fill I have lost 1lb...that's in 2 weeks.

I'm really frustrated with this. I fell I could eat loads , but I stop half way through my dinner in case I gain weight again.

I thought the fill would make me less hungry not more.

Driving me crazy.

Any ideas????

Hi there,

You have only had one fill, a small one at that, so you probably have no real restriction yet.

The band and fills do not cure hunger, just the portion size and until you get really good restriction, usually about 3-4 fills (sometimes more) you will have be strong willed.

You lost weight after the op because your body was swollen from the surgery, it's healing now and you will feel hungry again.

Try not to worry, this is very common as a lot of us banders will tell you and in the big picture of things, a stall doesn't matter.

Eat slightly denser foods containing lots of protein to keep you feeling fuller longer and ask for another fill and see how that goes.

Thanks for that. I am mainly eating ,for dinner potatoes and veg. I was told no meat for 3 months unless its minced.

Thankfully at the moment I am strong willed, but I'm nervous in case I go back to old habits.

How long do I need to wait between fills?

I paid with THG and only have 4 fills post op in my package.

I don't know how long you have to wait between fills with your provider but if its any consolation I'm going through exactly the same at the minute. I put a thread out last night stating that I have no restriction. I had my 1st fill 3 weeks ago and they put me 5ml in my 9ml band.I've rang the specialist nurse and she's arranging another fill for me. As Caz says it takes a few fills to get the right restriction so don't worry. You've come this far and you've had good weight loss so I doubt you'll give in to temptation and gain it all back. You've obviously got will power so just hang on in there and things will be fine. Good luckxxGaynorxx

Looking Forward,

As you have technically already paid for 4, you can have them when you wish, call your provider to book another.

You will need more than 4 fills in the lifetime of your band, so might be worth looking at a further package to cover the cost of these, as I know privately they can be anywhere between £75-£125 a pop.

Just to give you an example, there was a woman my surgeon did back in 2001 (his first patient) and she told us she had 5 in first year, 3 in second year and then 2 mini fills a year to maintain restriction.

Hi LF...I went for my x-ray and what should have been my first fill on 1/7/08 (which didn't happen as you know)...I'd spoken to the dietician the day before that and she arranged to speak with me again 3 weeks after the 1st fill just to make sure things were ok and to then arrange the next fill as required.

Do you have a dietician appointment/telephone chat coming up? you could ask her to arrange next fill or ring and ask to speak to one of the bariatric nurses (they're usually very helpful)

out of intrest do you know why they said no meat for 3 months that seems a real long time i find a little meat if the best thing to fill me up as it dense and doesnt go down . you are still at the begining babe hang in there it gets batter

I phoned THG and got an appointment with the dietitian for the 6th August.

Relieved to hear you are in the same position (sorry that sound bad), but I thought it was just me not losing weight. I have had no success with weight loss for years, hence the surgery. So I was beginning to think I had spent all that money for nothing.

I do have will power at the moment, but I'm scared I'll go back to my old ways.

I was told no meat unless minced as the port cannot deal with meat for the first 3 months. I tried a small bit of chicken and it would not go down. I'm not a big meat eater so don't find this a problem.

As always you have all been so helpful.

Its true a problem shared etc

How does it affect the port? The port is the access point for saline fills just under the surface of the skin??

How have you been advised to get proteins?
