Hi guys, I'm new to this site, been going to the hospital for 2 years and was finally told a few weeks ago I'm now on the waiting list for a by pass! Got my pre op app on 5th jan. I'm happy but scared to tell people I know incase they judge me, did anyone else feel like this?

I was thinking of only telling close friends and family but after I've had it people will wonder and they'll ask why I've been off work, I guess in the long run this is one of the silly things to worry about!

welcome to the site hun, i kept it quiet for a while then near the time just got bored of people saying what you having done s just told them. i only had one person who was really rude and called me a lazy B..ch! but i soon put her in her place and she wasnt really a friend anyway so no loss. Your real friends will be the ones who will support you along your journey. if te dont then you can do without them... i tell everyone ive had a bypass and ive had no negative comments... more of..hey well done you xx

I realise not everyone chooses to go the "shout it from the rooftops" approach, but I see no point in trying to be secretive, pretending I'm having a gall bladder or hernia op and miraculously returning to work 6 weeks later two or three stone lighter !!

its very much a personal thing i think. i planned on keeping it relatively quiet and only telling close family and friends. however as its getting closer i find myself telling everyone, i even told a lady behind the counter at my local shop the other day! lol. i'm too excited to keep it to myself. but whatever you decide there is no shame in facing your problem and doing domething about it by having the op. my family keep telling me how brave i am. x

I have made no secret of mine, but it isn't anyone elses business. There are people I want support, reassurance and love from and they are the only ones with opinions that really matter (you may have to be prepared to defend or explain your decision - although I'm lucky that has not been an issue for me to date)

It is so strange that you suddenly become public property when losing weight though! I remember being asked about my loose skin in a shop 'yeah, you've lost weight, but you must have loads of loose skin' (prior to regaining the weight and its mate) Some people are just odd, there is no pause between brain and mouth.

Be happy, tell who you want, look after yourself, it is your body, your life, your choice!

I decided to tell people and I actually found support in some people I would have never guessed. And also found out, some people I know had the surgery too! I've been given books, etc from people I would have not even talked to if I hadn't told them. Yes, there are a few negatives, but who cares what they think!
