PCOS Help Ladies

Hi Ladies,

Thanks for reading this, and I wonder if you can help.

My wife has PCOS and has gained a lot of weight over the years, as well as having some hair growth.

Now she doesnt want to have surgery for wl, and I am wondering if you can give me any tips on good/bad foods for her to eat or give me any useful websites.

Is there a PCOS forum, that she could join?

Hi lovely. PCOS makes you resistant to insulin so everything you eat more or less gets stored as fat which is why it's so hard to keep weight off. Having said that if you lose weight the symptoms of PCOS get less. It's very catch 22 and something I've battled with all my life since puberty. I would suggest eating a low glycemic diet like you would if you are a diabetic.

The specialist I saw years ago told me I would be diabetic in my 50's (I was 42 when it was diagnosed) and he prescribed metformin for me about 10 years ago but I don't know if they do that now. Any weight your wife can lose is beneficial to the Pcos but it is well know that it is terribly difficult to keep the weight off with this condition. As for the hair, I just whip my razor round my jawline when I clean my teeth every morning and give my forarms a shave about once a week lol.

Hope that helps. I'm sure if you google PCOS there will be a forum and loads of info on the subject.

Love Kate x

Yes they still give the drug metformin for pcos so if she's not on this take her to doctors and ask to be put on it. As for what foods what my friend got told was to be carful of carbs and try to stick to proteins as body has trouble breaking down the sugar in carbs. X x x

HI

Verity is the main PCOS website here in UK as far as I know. When I was first diagnosed with PCOS I did tonnes of research - the best diet I followed was one developed american doctors -think their surname was keller. losing weight is the key to pcos. My symptoms have improved vastly except for the facial hair. But thank god for groupon cos i am currently going through IPL laser treatment for it.
Metformin has now been licensed for use with pcos so her GP should be able to prescribe it - i tried it year ago before it was licensed specifically for pcos & it didnt really work for me but would def be worth her while talking to GP about it. There is also one of the contraceptive pills that deals effectively with excess hair but your wife may find that because she is overweight the doctor wont give it to her because of the the risk of clots etc.

Gary - I was also going to suggest laser treatment for the excess hair. Could she get it on the NHS?

(p.s. excess hair is not restricted to pcos sufferers - if I lost my tweezers, I'd look like King Kong's sister!)

Hi Gary ... I can't offer you any advise as I don't know anything about PCOS but do know that laser hair removal is the only long term solution to the hair problem. As Tink mentioned previously, Groupon periodically offer really good deals on laser treatment making it very affordable. Hope your wife can get a handle on her condition soon as it must be miserable for her (((hugs))) xxx :wave_cry:

you're welcome - u give us plenty of help too :)

remembered this post when I watched a programe last night The Food Hospital and a lady suffering from pcos was given a diet to follow.Google the food hospital channel four and it gives lots of useful info , diet tips and meds to treat the condition. hope this is helpful.xx

Hey,

I wish your life every bit of luck. The only effects I've had so far are weight gain and. Irregular periods.

Weight loss is key but I haven't found anything I can personally stick to. It's all different for different people.

I suggest your wife buying a low GI PCOS help book.

I wish you both all the luck in the world xxx

Oh and I had cream as I started getting facial hair from my gp now I'm as smooth as a baby's bottom (without the nappy rash!) :D xxx

Hi Vespa, can I ask what cream? I have pcos and have facial down but it's fair so hides very well but I am aware of it, when I went to the gp about it he just said, I can't see any facial hair!!! Waste of my time but I'm very conscious about it x

Ahhh I can't remember what it was! I've got docs tomorrow so I'll ask and let you know! xxx

eflorinithine I think. However, many PCT's have decided not to pay for it as it is not always particularly effective

I have PCOS and recently started laser for the excess hair on my face. It is amazing and I feel so much better about myself. It also cost less than I expected.

Money well spent.

Crackers x
