Guys I need some advice here please not sure if I am going round the bend here!!!!

First Letter from PCT to Hosp 4/01/10

Dear Doc

I should be grateful if you might accept referral of Ms Ellie to the specialist Bariatric surgical centre.

I am pleased to confirm funding for Ms Ellie to attend St Richards specialist Bariatric treatment centre and for surgery to aid weight reduction as appropiate.

Please note that funding has been approved conditional to Ms Ellie maintaining her current bmi until surgery. Where Patients show significant weight gain in the lead-up to surgery, funding approval will need to be reconsidered by the kent and medway obesity single patient funding panel.

Please forward treatment invoices to me as below.

Letter from Hospital to PCT 29/01/10

Dear PCT

Thank you for your referral of Ms Ellie to the bariatric unit. Prior to us accepting her her referral, she will need to undergo sllep studies. I have asked Ms Ellie to ask her GP if they will organise this for her in a local unit, butr if they are unable to organise this, I wonder if you would give consideration to her undergoing a sllep study in our bariatric unit.

Once she has undergone sleep studies and any treatment resulting from this , I would be grateful if you could re-confirm her funding assessment and surgery as appropiate.

St Richards.

Now I am confused as If I have (Im sure I have sleep aponea) then does that mean I cannot have surgery until treatment has finished??? I have read somewhere that someone has been using the CPAP machine for 12 yrs!!!! Its a long time to wait me thinks!

I THINK that it takes three months for cpap treatment to be seen to have enough of an effect to make surgery safe. I saw it a couple of times on Fat Doctor and the people had to have treatment for three months.
Hope that helps.
Steph xx

I've got a cpap machine and was told i needed to be settled on it for approx 3-6 months before surgery would be agreed.

Weird how they want PCT funding to approve the sleep study as i had mine before funding was agreed - if they suspect you have it then it isnt an exceptional treatment

Thanks Kat for your reply at the moment im doing the Oximeter test at home tonight will be my second night then I return the unit back tomorrow to the sleep clinic

Good luck , hopefully you won't have it :)

Ellie are you tired throughout the day. Prone to napping whenever given a chance and sometimes without meaning too? Do you feel tired when you wake up in the morning?

Are you grumpy towards the later end of the day?

These were my OH symptoms, that and me hearing him stopping breathing of course...

Good luck as you have funding am glad to say for once i hope you don't have it. usually folks are glad for a comorbidity and i have to wish it on em... xx

No **** Sherlock!!

I sometimes nap during the day for 1/2 hr but I do get up early in the morning 6am ish, and go to bed late but I can easily get out of bed and then come downstairs and fall asleep in my chair! I sometimes hold my breath when im awake (madness i know) dont realise im doing it so god knows what im like when im asleep, hubby says that I snore but hasent noticed that I stop breathing when im asleep. I suppose the sooner I get this test done the better.

Thanks Julie youre a star xxx

Just need some reassurance sometimes, I try to think positive but sometimes the mind just start wandering..... ive now got it in my head that the hospital dosent want me on their books!!

Your welcome sweetie, if i was you i'd take the old man when you go for your apnoea test. Reason been they ask about when your asleep, how the **** you supposed to answer them? You're asleep lol. xx

He does come with me Julie, he is very protective of me this is all because when I was giving birth to my daughter my consultant then was so anti "obese" and gave me such a hard time for being overweight.

It will be a co morbidity that will go in your favour for surgery,if you have it bad, they give you a cpap for a few months to make sure you are safe for surgery.Once you have surgery the aponea goes in most cases.

My hospital asked my GP to refer me for tests due to the answers I gave in one of their questionaires. It was confirmed in December and I was given a machine straight away, I never confirmed it with the hosptial until my pre-op appointment 5 days before the op. I just made sure that the important people knew i.e. the surgery team and took my machine in with me as I had to use it every night whilst there. There was no problems at all for me, but I had made sure that, as I had seen in on the Fat Doctors, that I had the machine for 3 months, just in case lol.
