Post op cough

I was banded on Friday and unfortunatley for me have developed some sort of a chest infection...can't stop coughing and I'm so worried in case I rupture any of the stitches holding the port or band in place. Has anyone else suffered this problem?

I was quite chesty after. Use a pillow to support your tummy and keep coughing. Don't avoid coughing as this will make things worse.

If it doesnt clear up or you start coughing up discoloured phlegm then see your GP.

Thank you so much for your help here Julie; I've been nearly demented with it today. The cushion sounds like a very good plan; I used one on the way back from Dolan Park yesterday and it was a great help with the bumps in the road. I have one here now; thanks so much again!

Hi Poppy, I was the same too. The cushion thing works well. It'd be quite rare to undo the stitches with coughing I think. It may not be an infection...I was told that your diaphragm can get irritated because of all the swelling and general moving things about while their fitting the band and that can cause the cough too. I couldn't get to the end of my breath either without coughing but my nurse told me to keep taking deep breaths as much as I could to get oxygen in to help with the healing process. Take it easy...you'll be fine :) xx

hi love , brilliant advice from everyone , but really love ,any breathlessness or cough, you should go to doctors , im sure its nothing ,but after surgery its more important , due to risk of dvt ,i had this and just feel strongly that no one should take a chance with this ,when theres no need too, please get it checked ,just for reassurance, hope you feel better, and good luck on your journey , x

Same thing with me after surgery. It cleared up in no time but if it carries on for a longer time see your gp xx

Hi there I am due for my bypass 24th august but just wanted to say I had a cyst removed from my ovary last year and after the operation developed a bad cough. In the end I went to the doctors and I had a chest infection and they gave antibiotics for this. If I was you may be best to just get checked out. Better to be safe and the doctors won't mind if they know you have had surgery. Good luck let us know how you get on luv kaz x

I was a bit chesty in hospital straight after surgery and they gave me a nebuliser (dont know how to spell that). They explained that because the area that is sore after surgery is our tummy we tend to just breathe shallow breaths using only the top part of our lungs meaning that all the crap collects at the bottom of the lungs making way for infections etc.. So I was given breathing exercises to do to make sure I used all my lung space and it did the trick as Ive had no problems since. It basically just deep breathing making sure you breathe right in no matter how uncomfortable. It may now be a little late for this though so you should pop along and see your GP in case its got to the infection stage. Good luck and congrats on your new band xx

Aw, thanks everyone for the advice and kind wishes. I am now feeling much better and my cough is nearly gone...just the odd splutter every now and again. Mind I have to say it didn't half sap my energy and today is the first day that I have felt a little more like my old self...so I treated myself to a mini spa day at the hairdressers (hair, nails, eyebrows and lashes)

Many thanks again!

glad ya feeling better x,and nearly back to ya old self,,ohhh im so jealous ,keep putting off my nails til after surgery , my fingers look like lil fat sausages, with out my acrylics ! lol x

This is interesting. I have chronic asthma so really susceptible to chest infections and breathing problems. Might be something to mention at my nurses appointment next week.

Thanks!

LOL...Dawn, that is funny re your fingers cos I felt the same way about mine. I have been following your journey for a couple of months and was really gutted for you that your surgery was cancelled...not very long now though; get that nail appointment booked in for post op; you deserve it! x

Kazziehill - will do! x

Hi, Don't mean to muscle into thread, but I had band on 13th too, had a bit of a cough for the first couple of days, but that seems to have cleared up now.
Swelling definitely improving everyday and getting about a lot more easily today (even went for a walk along the seafront).
Hope you have a speedy recovery...I think 'baby steps' are the key; just take one day at a time xx

If it makes you feel any better I came out if hospital on Sunday weighing 4 lbs more than I did going in on the Saturday...what the hell!! However now 4 lbs less than the pre-op Saturday weight :)
Hard to tell about the swelling, sure it is improving, each day seems to make a difference.

Bloomin iPhone, hadn't actually finished my message, but it decided to send it anyway!
I have to take my dressings off today..eek, not really looking forward to that, but I guess it is another step closer to being recovered.
Hope your Hen Do goes well, I'm sure you will look fab, two weeks is plenty of time.
It's my first wedding anniversary a month today, so I'm hoping to look better for that (sadly still need to lose 12lbs to get back to the weight I was for the wedding last year!)
Take care of yourself, take things slowly and get plenty of rest xxx
