Post op vitimin suppliments

Hi all

I've recieved my list of daily vitimin suppliments i have to take daily from my consultant and was wondering how all you post banders or bypassers managed. Having never really taken any suppliments before this is kind of new to me, can you take the suppliments in tablet form straight away or is it possible to purchase in liquid form ?, is it possible to buy just one tablet that contains everything? or is it a case of taking lots ?. I've also noticed that they seem to be a lot cheaper if bought in bulk online, has anyone got any suggestions for a good supplier they have found ?

Sorry i know this question has probably been asked before ! :)

Thanks all

Richard

Well, I'm a vegetarian and couldn't take Sanatogen or Centrum - Tesco's own do a complete M'vit and M'mineral tablet (under 3 quid for 90) that is veggie, has a lot of the stuff we need at the full RDA and better than some top (and overpriced) name brands :)

I'm just over 3 weeks post-op (RNY GB), so at the moment I am a bit unsure if I can take such a large tablet (Tesco one is enteric coated, so unable to crush them.) I have opted for the veggie complete capsule from Boots - the Pharmacist said I could open it and pop it in some juice without any probs :D

It's 3 for 2 at the mo with the Boots ones... ;)

Hope that helps...

I was recomended Berocca multi-vits/minerals. You can get them in Tesco and Sainsburys. They are dissolveable tablets and actually make an ok drink, so no chewing, swallowing tabs to worry about. Not cheap though but working well for me. Hope that helps x

yup my surgeon insists on forceval capsules (and says they are fine for even a few days post-bypass to swallow as they dissolve in the stomach). I also take ferrous fumerate which is a liquid sugar free version of ferrous sulphate, and calcichew.

I'm actually surprised at the lack of special bariatric multivits/mins on the market... even the good old BNF (the Doctors 'bible') doesn't have much in the way of easy to swallow/liquid s'ments.

I am on Thinner Times (it's an American GB forum) and they have loads of helpful sup'ments... we need to complain!!!

Not that I'm fond of complaining...

I too have been prescribed forceval. a big tablet which i had to start taking 2 weeks post op. even now sometimes makes me wretch!! also have to take iron tablets and calcichew twice daily and also lanzoprazole twice daily. Feel great so they must all be working!!! The calcichew you chew (obviously the name is a give away really) and the lanzoprazole comes in a tablet which dissolves initially until you can manage more solid stuff. x

Hi,

On the question of vitamins, I was just wondering when you were all told to start your vitamins? My surgeon says at 6 weeks post op. I know a lot of people take them 2 weeks post op. I asked my doctor why, and he said it is because the vitamins contain iron, and it can cause severe constipation in the early weeks after surgery, which we dont need! I will stick to my surgeons advice, but just curious how others get on taking them 2 weeks post op?? I too am on Thinner Times forum, and the Americans have great choice for Bariatric Vitamins. Unfortunately, the companies do not mail them to here at the moment! I find it surprising considering the amount of WLS in the UK and Europe now...I mean my surgeon in Belgium has done approx 9500 Bariatric surgeries altogether, including approx 2800 RNY gastric bypasses. The man never sleeps! lol Does anyone know of a Bariatric supplement for UK/Europe?

presecription refused

My problem gp refused repeat prescription.

i have forceval, but use bassetts chewie vit and minerals and iron stopped these as gp refused said didnt need then also had calcichew and lansoprazole.

explained to gp that surgeon said these were long term but he dismissed this saying i dont need them was worried so rang surgeon who is on holiday spoke tos ecretary and she said this often happens and will speak with surgeon on his return from holidays.

Wow, I think your doctor may need to look into what the side effects of a gastric bypass are! He must realise the malabsorption (sp?) we have and the fact we do not get all the required vitamins from our diet alone? I would continue to take your vitamins etc for the sake of your long term health. Also, you need to make sure you take good quality vitamins, and take the correct dose for life after bariatric surgery. I hope you get this sorted when your surgeon is back, and your GP is a little nicer to you! Warm wishes to you.

I started mine 2 weeks post op and generally was ok. GP's don't seem to fully understand how crucial it is for the vitamins etc post op. My bariatric nurse provided me with a detailed letter explaining what i needed to be taking and doses for my GP which eased alot of the problems. if you are struggling with prescriptions get your surgeon or nurse to do a letter x

I started taking zoton straight away after the op, as given it in hospital.

The others I started as soon as I came home (3 days post op) and I take the following -

Forceval
Ferrous Fumerate Sugar Free Syrup
Calcichew

All ferrous sulphate tablets are sugar coated and therefore can contribute to dumping and body may have problems absorbing. It took me ages to find the ferrous fumerate, long conversation with the specialist nurses and pharmacists!

The ferrous fumerate has not affected my bowels in any way. This could be because I have Benefibre every day, but I doubt it. I think its just gentler on your system than ferrous sulphate.

Note - your body needs vitamin c to absorb iron, so always have a small glass of fresh orange juice 10-15minutes before your ferrous. For this reason I always have my forceval in the morning and my ferrous later in the day aswell.

Note number 2 :D - don't take ferrous at the same time as calcium. Ever. it will make you turn green. ok so it won't but it's not good for you.
