pre-asessment

Depends on where you have your surgery, but usually done by pre-assessment nurse who takes a written medical history and also may listen to your heart valves and lungs to exclude any abnormalities, you will also have 3 or 4 blood samples taken 3 swabs (nose throat, perineum) for MRSA screen, ECG and possibly pulmonary function test if astmatic you will also have height/weight checked. You will normally find out same day if your surgery can proceed.
You will normally also have opportunity to ask questions and may be given some info pamphlets to take home.
All the best.

Never having been in hospital before I am confused by some of the terms. Is the pre op check the one done a week or two before surgery?

I had my MRSA and h pylori tests taken when I was at the 'meet the surgeon' stage a few weeks ago. I know all health area's are different, but I assumed they would just check my heart again and general health just before the op. Confused (again!!)

Hi Trish
Ideally the pre-op assessment should be done 2 weeks before but can vary from hospital to hospital the reason for 2 weeks is to allow sufficient time to carry out further investigations (that would not be possible at time of pre-op) should need arise eg detection of heart murmur requires an echocardiogram (ultrasound scan of heart) to assess heart structure/overall function. If MRSA swabs come back positive the longer in advance pre op is allows time for decolonisation and rescreening.
Pre op checks used to be done at one time on admission by a junior doctor but this often resulted in cancelled ops and therefore wasted time/money when previously undetected problems were found. Thankfully this is rare now with the current systems.
