What prices have you all paid for a band and where?

I'm paying 3990 for a balloon and wanted to know how much more a band is :)

Hello Tif didnt want to read and run, cant help on prices but sure there will be some peeps later who will know your answer.

Hi

I paid paid £5950 in April 09 with the WLS Group, the prices have increased slightly but you now get 3 years aftercare with this.

Try a google search Tif, Im sure you will get some more answers from that.

Good luck with your research!

can't help with prices, but bear this in mind lovey, a balloon is usually just a 6 month temporary procedure, to help you eat less over this timescale, after that, it's removed, you're back to no restriction, and your own devices, the band is however used over a lot longer period, and has been proven to work over that longer period, your choice is really can you stretch your finances to the band at a minimum, cos the extra over the balloon in my opinion would be money better spent in the long term ;)

Tif,

I paid £4950 for my band with The Hospital Group which includes 6 month surgical cover and two years aftercare.
I cannot fault the aftercare so far.
Also picked Mr Paul Super as my surgeon - he does 25 bands a week so certainly has lots of experience x

I would try to stretch to a band too... the average price is £5000-6000 depending on where you go.

Phone the private companies and ask them to send you a brochure and price list on each procedure.

have you asked for a gp referal on the nhs ?

I cant wait that long - I'd rather pay than wait months on end. Also my experiences of my local doctors, they would rather tell me to "eat less"...oh...thank you doctor....i havent tried that grrrrr

Have you changed doctors within the practice only?
It is fairly easy to change to a different doctors' surgery. Just go to the NHS website and put in your postcode for a list of surgeries currently accepting new patients in your area.
Then go fill in a form at the new practice , you need not say why you are changing GPs either.

I totally understand your sense of urgency but I would advise against a balloon.
It's a hell of a lot of money to chance on something that lasts for 6 months and seems to have a worryingly high failure rate.

The band at least is meant to be permanent and can be tweaked as and when you need adjustments long term.
You also have to go into it knowing that by having a band in, you don't necessarily go on autopilot to weight loss.

It works wonderfully if you follow the guidelines for eating and exercise but there is usually a period of time where you have to act like you are on a conventional diet before you get proper restriction.

However, even an unfilled band gives some degree of default restriction and if you choose the right healthy foods, you will still feel a difference affecting the amount you eat.

If you eat choc , ice cream , crisps etc they go right down without any trouble so you need to be prepared to limit amounts of these foods, you can still have them if you want but as part of a calorie allowance or for a treat once a week.

Even after perfect restriction (and that needs tweaking now and then) you can still eat the high fat high sugar foods that go right down, so you have to change how you feel about food and take responsibility for everything you put in your mouth.

I'm saying this because I had my band in as soon as I had money available and only found this site 4 weeks after my operation.
I did everything wrong for the first year and I have learnt finally the hard way , how to get the best out of my band.

There is no quick fix to lasting weight loss and we have to face up to the fact that we have to change our habits permanently for the better. Even bypassers get into trouble long term if they try to continue eating the wrong way and there are ops in the states now certainly where people are re-bypassed as they have stretched their pouches so much.

Myself and the other banders are more than happy to advise you anyway we can I'm sure.

I know you want to lose it as soon as possible but please make sure you are fully aware of what you need to do after the op to make sure it works well for you, or I am scared you will feel disappointed and that you have thrown your money away.

I certainly would have found it very hard to really take in any info or advice pre -op...I had the money and the opportunity and I could not wait and would not consider putting off the chance but on reflection, I should have done more research.
This site would have helped me go back through the NHS and have the best operation suited to me but I didn't have the advantage of seeing it first.
You do and I hope you take enough time to really research the nhs route through a new doctor as well as what op is going to REALLY work with your eating habits and willingness to change your lifestyle.

All the very best to you and please ask if you need anything x

Lots of love xxx

COmpletely understand - hence why some on here go private. Additionally there is no guarantee you'll get the op given funding issues etc.

If you can stretch to it go for banding x

My problem is that im only (HA HA only) 5 stone over weight, the doctors have said (from various practices) that im not in a high enough risk category to even be considered. I think I could stretch to a £5000 band but nothing over this. Im not brave enough to go abroad, so I think the balloon is really the only option for me. I know its a 50% fail rate but I just have to do something.

Am i being unrealistic thinking i can get a band for £5000?

Try and get the band over the balloon if you feel you must get something...I know you are desparate but you still need to think long term and what is going to last for you and help you keep the weight off.
Think ahead...if the balloon fails (and it's quite likely, I think Di answered you about hers) how are you going to feel at 5 stone or more overweight and 3K out of pocket?

If you go for a band I will try and help you as much as I can but try not to rush into it x

Can you wait a little longer and save a little more?

I know you want to get on with weight loss but please do not rush into any decisions yet.

It's not always the magic wonder cure people think it is, for bypassers it takes dedication to stick rigidly to their dietary needs and to keep up with supplements, for banders it takes more will power than most imagine as it can be cheated and until you get good restriction it can be hard to loose any weight and for a balloon, this is only a temporary measure. It will allow you to loose some weight but after its removal you are going to be back to square one.

Balloons are mainly used to lose weight before another procedure.

Some people have put this surgeries on finance, maybe this could be an option...or plead with family to help you out if they can.

The balloon would be like going on a restricted diet, stopping and the regaining all over again, please heed other replies it would be such a waste of money. To think if you had waited a little longer and saved more or tried by referral for a band. You would be gutted next year to still be 5st or more overweight and the only pounds you had lost were from your bank balance! You look young to me,as a mum please think some more;is the advice I would give you.You took time to put weight on;it takes time to come off, which ever way you do it.
