Hi all i have seem lots of posts about protein powder. i havent heard that i need this from hospital yet but should i get some?
If so what type/flavour do i get?
Also how do i use it?

Hi, I've used protein powder before and after my op.

I use Impact Whey from My Protein. They do small sample packs of all their flavours so that you don't end up with a huge bag of something you hate!

Personally I hated the choc flavours and preferred the fruit or vanilla or plain ones so I now buy a huge bag of unflavoured and a few bags of their flavouring powder in strawbery and vanilla but you could use NAS Crusha if you prefer.

I mix one measure of protein (plastic scoop can be bought from My Protein) with some water (sometimes milk if I want it tastier) and take it in place of a breakfast or as a mid-morning or afternoon snack. It fills me up and stops any snacking.

Others may use it differently but this has worked for me - I don't eat meat or drink milky coffees etc.so would struggle to get enough protein otherwise.

Be aware that there is still calories, fat and carbs in protein powders so use it as part of your diet, not as an 'free' extra.

Good luck.

Wait and see what your hospital advises, stick with good food and you wont need any extra.

I'm still pre-op and have tried the various my protein samples and hated the choc mint and choc nut flavours but loved the strawberry, vanilla and chocolate ones, have brought a few more to take on holiday with me post-op as I will only be just under 5 weeks post-op and so not necessarily on solids by then. Just want something with me that will fill the protein gap if what is available in the tapas bars just doesn't suit for the soft food stage I will be at by then (all being well). I also have a large pot of unflavoured so I can add it to savoury foods topping up the protein levels that way rather than just in shakes. I also found on my test runs that using soya milk rather than cows milk with the shakes made it taste much less sweet which I had found worrying incase the sweet taste would be enough to make me dump. Soya milk on its own is an aquired taste but with a protein shake powder is much nicer and as I say less sweet than cows milk.
The hospital dietitian when I asked her about protein shakes said she couldn't reccommend a particular one and suggested adding a scoop of dried skimmed milk powder to an ordinary glass of milk as it would fortify the protein levels in the milk.
Lots to think about and research pre-op so you know what you like and can enjoy if your provider reccommends them to you.
Good luck on your journey.
