Protein Shakes Extra advice please.

Having read a lot on here about them I thought as I am not a fan of shakes I had better get some samples and find one or two flavours I can drink. So far tried some from MyProtein and hated the choc mint and the choc nut flavours, so far the strawberry and chocolate are better although they taste really sweet. Is this normal or despite my sweet tooth are they just tasting like that as I have cut out a lot of the sweet treats I usually have.

The dietitian wouldn't recommend a particlar one and said just add a scoop of skimmed milk powder to get the extra protein that way with out all the other bits in the shakes (I thought that was part of the reason to have then for the protein and the added vitamins and minerals or have I got the wrong end of the stick?)

Because of the closeness of my surgery to my holiday in Spain I thought incase I was limited to what I could eat I would take some with me but if I am struggling to drink them now how will I cope post-op and as they are so sweet won't they cause dumping?

Anyone got any answers or suggestions please. :confused:

chelsea and westminster hospital told me maximuscle ,luckily my sons and their mates use these when weight training so i got to taste them and plumped for the vanilla ,which i will add other flavours to ,or il add it to a coffee,i know not every one uses them,but like you ,i want to be prepared,the thing thats confusing me is the supplements after,i want to,obviously take the right ones but have no idea what ones,hopefully hospital will help after op , x

I've bought the Whey Protein from Holland & Barrett in the big red tubs and the best thing is they're on offer at the moment...£14.99 instead of £29.99. I've bought the chocolate and strawberry versions and have been mixing them with either skimmed milk or 0% fat greek yoghurt just at breakfast and they're really nice :) I did try mixing them with water as someone at work does that but it was a big no no in my book, tasted awful!!

This is an interesting subject . . . and a science, please beware ! I have spent some time researching ‘protein’ drinks and have come to the conclusion that Optimum Nutrition 100 Percent Whey Gold Standard is the one for me (available to order from : http://sportandsupplements.com/categories/Protein-Powder/) . . . I have calculated that the cost is more or less the same as Holland and Barrret sale prices so no silly advertising gimmicks here.

In addition, it has 24g of protein per 30.4g serving with only 1g of fat (of which saturates – 0.5g) 3g Carbs (of which sugars - 1g) and 120 Calories which when compared with the H & B range is very favourable.

Prehapes the best thing about this one is that it will mix in a glass with a folk /spoon.

i've read somewhere online that you might have to keep an eye on the carbohydrate /sugar levels on the packaging on this one

Why are protein powders sooooo expensive?

I agree it is a very expensive ‘product’ but it is specialist market which would sell the same amount irrespective of price (within reason) that is why we need to get the balance just right and waste money on ‘ineffective drinks’. As for as I know protein is not available on prescription . . . xx

Hi Dawn

Maximuscle pro max extreme’ ticks all the boxes but is a little up of fats (not enough to worry about) . . . my only concern with this one is that it is around £25.00 for 908g whereas I have just bought 3 x 7.5kg of ‘Optimum Nutrition 100 Percent Whey Gold Standard’ (delivered) for £112.00 which works out at £14.00 (ballpark) for 908g (2lb) (about a 40% cheaper) ! ! !

Hi

It is perhaps best not to prepare foods in advance as (in my experience) your tastes will change dramatically . . . you vitamins and supplements will be supplies by your own GP so nothing to worry about there. I was advised against protein supplements and told to get my ‘fix’ via solids intake.

Sadly (or maybe not so sadly!) I am struggling to eat enough and certainly would not be able to consume sufficient solids to secure the requisite 60 – 70g of protein per day (RNY need more that the normal man in the street due to malabsorption) ~ hence my protein drinks research. 60%+ of the 60 – 70g should come from your diet and the balance should come from your protein supplement. We are all different, some post op on here are doing fab and enjoying solids with no problem . . . You don’t really need to think about protein intake for a couple of weeks post op . . . you may have a little trouble meeting the 60 – 70g goal your first weeks post surgery because your body is still ‘adjusting’. However, you must focus on eating your good protein foods first. In other words, do not fill up on starches, fruits or vegetables, before eating your good protein foods. Remember, protein is necessary for proper wound healing and fighting infections after surgery. It also helps your body to repair and strengthen cells, and it helps you to build new cells as well. Taking your protein as directed will also help to prevent or lessen hair loss (provided you are also taking your vitamin/mineral supplements as instructed). Good luck with your journey xx

I think I am lucky because I can eat protein. I haven't had to have any suppliments so far.
My concern is that I dont eat enough veg or fruit so I have bought some fruit in natural grape juice and have had it with low sugar/low fat custard. Very nice it was too and a bonus is that it makes you go to the toilet lol.
I wonder how much 70/80g protein looks liked as a chop or sliced cooked meat.
Going to google.

i've read somewhere online that you might have to keep an eye on the carbohydrate /sugar levels on the packaging on this one

Just been and had a look at the label, it has the following per 25g serving:

Protein = 18g
Carbs = 1.9g
Sugars = 1.1g
Fat = 2.2g
Saturates = 0.8g
Fibre = 0.4g
Sodium = 0.04g

Doesn't seem tooooo bad to me compared to others, unless I'm missing something :confused:

I only have one scoop a day in the mornings as I generally don't have time for breakfast.

H x

Thanks everyone some great advice and suggestions as a result of what I thought may be a silly question. I'm so glad it's not just me confuddled by them all and that there are plenty out there who have found some good ones to use.
