Protein shakes

I used to use protein shakes pre op to support weight training. I still have some left over but they have small bits of porridge oats in them. Do you think they would be ok to still use?

I suppose it depends on the consistency, sugar content etc but at some stage you should.

Check with your team though :D

For some reason they don't like them in this area my consultant is dead against them. Not sure why?

Yeah I know I'm on the soft food phase now, And I know my protein intake is moderate at best because of small volumes of food I'm taking on board. And after being on the Liver Reduction Diet, which is all protein the weight loss was drastic but it didn't do me any harm . It proves protein is good for weight loss!

If they are still in date they should be ok. Your Protein intake should be in line with how heavily you are exercising. When I was training heavily I was advised to go as high as 120g a day of Protein and its hard to get that much in without shakes so I used them and protein bars every day as a supplement

I think they are, I can't seem to find a sell by date on them, I know they are less than a year old. When I used to train with weights, before my huge weight gain, due injury from another hobby. I was also told from a few differing sources that you should aim for 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight. But 2 grams of protein per pound of body weight is better. But like you said you have got to be going for it in the gym. I am training but not hammering it so really I will probably only take two a day just to help support the weight loss and to increase my diminishing protein that I'm lacking due to food volume.

Jesus H 2grams per pound could be over 400 grams a day for a heavy weight builder, their liver and kidneys would be put under so much strain they'd be permanently damaged trying to get the toxins out of the body. Even if they were shifting a couple of tons per session they'd be taking a hell of a risk. I wanted to go up to 150 grams but my NUT wouldn't let me, she said I'd be dicing with death or if I didn't peg out my kidneys would pack up. She was unhappy with 120 until I showed her my log of what I was lifting and when.

So please mate before you go over 100 gs a day get agreement from your NUT and if you don't currently keep a log of sets, reps, and poundages I'd advise one so you can justify the increase

Good luck with it all, the lifting is the thing I miss most, even more so than the spin classes and I used to love them for lots of reasons LOL

Yeah a lad I know, he is a big unit, eats 4000 calories a day. But his lifts are huge, he's on at least a 250lb bench and a 300lb deadlift he whacks 4 protein shake into himself daily. On top of his calorific intake. But thanks for the heads up Karlos I will bear it in mind

In my powerlifting hay day I could bench 220 dead lift 380 and squat 350 lbs not Kgs LOL I took everything I could get carbo energisers Creatine, Glutamin, caffein, protein shakes, bars, meal replacements you name it and apart from steroids it went down my neck. The day the Doctor told me my neck vertebrae was what he would expect to find in a sixty five year old and if I didn't want to crush my spine I had to stop, broke my heart. It lead to me getting to the same size as a baby Blue Whale and the rest is history...............

Ha ha, I love spin too! for a variety of reasons but NOT because the local rugby team go to the same gym - honest ;) xx

Hi r u in the north east ? as I asked about protein shakes because people keep going on about protein, protein and more protein saying that its the most important. However when I asked my consultant he said don't bother with the shakes infact they r dead against them and the dietitian said just eat a balanced meal with equal measures of protein, carbs and vegetables, every hospital gives different advice I am just wondering if your taking the shakes and are they ok for you ?

Hi, yes I am in the north east, my consultant told me the same as yours did, and the dietician also gave me the same advice. I do use them now, and find them useful for a snack and they are pretty important to anyone who exercises. But, also as I have found out each one of us is different and I wouldn't say follow my advice because i'm not an expert in Bariatrics. The decision is yours to make, if you want too follow that route or not. There is different types of protein out there to buy. I use the pure protein that just supports muscular growth, with no carbs or extra cals. Some are weight gainers that are higher in carbs, cals and fats.

Hi I have used them before, I used low carb, low sugar diet whey protein, am just thinking for added protein as I may not always meet the required amount. Its useful to add with food and make protein enriched foods. So I am thinking I might try them, even just for breakfast added to porridge or making a smoothie etc thanks for the advice x

I'm been sleeved 10 weeks ago.
My nutritionists requires a protein intake of 60grams a day. Having 1 protein shake for breakfast is the only way I could find to meet the requirement.
