Pureed diet

Hi everyone,
I had bypass on monday morning and I am starting the pureed diet today. how much and what should I eat? I am a little frightened to eat so was thinking some soup. is a mug of soup too much?
thanks
J

You can eat anything you can purée. Make sure you add lots of liquid/ gravy to it. I managed about a ramekin full of puréed food, but everyone is different :)

Add plenty of gravy etc to any meal you're making. But keep to small portions and don't try to finish the plate, no matter how tempting, as a full pouch will hurt. Mash, soups, mushy peas all goes down well.

Wow!! I've got to stay on liquid for 2 weeks!

I reckon I'll be chewing my arm off by puree stage!

I puréed nearly all normal meals but found it useful to do a batch of potato, carrot and turnip and then freeze in ice cubes as I got fed up of having to purée all of the time. I found that one cube of each veg and maybe 2 of potato with some sort of protein (meat or fish) and gravy was just about the right amount of food. Variety is the most important thing to keep you interested. I finished my purée diet last Monday and now moving on to next stage. Good luck :)

Yougurt's can be nice (small pots). Dessert pots; low sugar custard/ rice etc, all nice too. I've now progressed to omlettes, never knew how good an omlette was until now. Nom,nom,nom....

I started puree yesterday and managed 2 spoons of porridge for breakfast; 2 spoons of soup for lunch and; 2 spoons of soup with 4 teaspoons of smash and cheese for tea. Husband had a pizza!
I have some ambrosia low fat rice puds in the fridge - are these ok to take? not sure how much of the carbs in them turn to sugar.

I've had no problems with rice pudding, add milk to it though. Good to see you back. :)

how big are your portion sizes joe? the dietician told me i would be managing 1-3 tsps but i can manage more.
how many spoons of say mash and pureed beans would you recommend i put in a bowl?

As they say, everyone is different - but as a rule allow 1 tblsp of each item = 1 spoon of mash, 1 spoon of beans etc. Try not to eat until you're full, as being full after this kind of surgery takes on a whole new meaning.:(

ive been stopping myself after a few mouthfuls.
my throat is so sore at the minute as the tube has caused an infection in the back of my throat which is making it uncomfortable to eat. other than that i feel great and im in no pain

Throat pain is quite common after the op, mine was a tad rough too. Guage yourself carefully, minimal healthy food is the key for the first few weeks. The odd small yougurt now and then or spoon of low sugar custard etc, all a delight on the taste buds after the liver diet. Though do go very easy on portion control.

Sunderland say 2-3 tablespoons eg of porridge or soup - I managed 2. I'm not getting a full feeling - I'm just stopping when my pouch starts to bubble. I do get more wind after drinking though. Only managed 1/3 a cup of tea and half a milky coffee today.

This is my 2nd day on puree, managed about half a ramekin of total yogurt for breakfast, about the same of tuna mayo for lunch. For dinner I had some cheesy mash - only managed about 3 tsp - with nearly a full ramekin of the tuna. Had 2 small glasses of milk too. Trying to get fluids in, as am so thisty got to just over a litre, but it can cause lots of discomfort. I'm not getting full either, just finish when I think I've had enough.

Over 2 weeks in now and I'm still struggling with cups of tea/ coffee. Can only manage half a cup.
