Question for post Bypassers

Hi,
I'm due to have my bypass next week and
was wondering!
If you've had your bypass,
Do you miss the foods you liked? ie yorkshire puds, curries ect and did you worry about misssing them
before you had the op?
Thanks :) xx

I don't miss anything as such I had my collection of last meals as such. Battered sausage & chips, full English breakfast & the wonderfully biryani I love from the brilliant local takeaway, in the weeks leading up to starting the pre-op diet. As such I can still have the full English just cooked in a healthier manner as in fact it was on that last meal binge but just the quantity of the food would not be possible now. I rarely had sausage & chips from the chippy but a last one was a box ticked as having been enjoyed & set aside as a never again meal. The biryani is something I hope to brave at some point when I can cope with rice better,(my pouch won't take a lot before it gets upset & rejects it) but I think I will have lots of pots to freeze for another day as it is so rich.
I have low fat ready meal curries, & homemade curries initially made with quorn now with chicken or pork I've yet to brave beef it being a bit tougher to digest. Basically I eat what I want I miss nothing but avoid the naughty foods that slips down to easily or disguises its self as delicious foods but laden with fats & sugars. I dump less than I did at the start although it does still happen on occasions if I'm not careful. Sometimes I slip & old bad habits creep back & slide under my guard but the fact I can't binge to the old levels is a godsend & gives me a chance to get those demons back in their box before I self sabotage to much.
I know I have to use this marvellous tool properly as its my only chance to get slim & healthy with my eating under control, I love my new slimmer body if not the flabby bits, I love the positive comments I get, the surprised looks & double takes from people I haven't seen since pre-op when they see me for the first time. The life with less pain & more gain is great, the life with more energy & freedom to do things is great, the chance to live long enough to be old enough to retire & enjoy the plans I've made with my husband is great.
It's the best thing that's happened to me & I intend to live up to the responsibility of my new pouch & live long & well on it.

Tastes change so you might not like stuff the same, there is nothing you eat now you cant later. Its just smaller, lower fat/sugar portions.

good luck with opp:553:

Thank you,
i'm just struggling at the minute,
questioning myself, if i'm doing the right thing!
i dont think the pre op diet is helping!!
i suppose its normal to get a bit of cold feet! :) xx

Cold feet is 100% natural for most people, I stood in the theatre thinking 'just say "I've changed my mind" Donna, turn on your heel and go!' but I'm glad I didn't.

I'm still on the puree/sloppy stage - and have had pureed 3 been chilli already. It is so strange not being hungry, but you're taste buds are still alive and kicking. This stage can be boring - but in a few short weeks it will all be a thing of the past - just like my size!

Take baby steps, follow the teams advice and you will do brilliantly!

Good luck x

I can eat all the foods I used to eat pre-op, just obviously smaller portions. The only thing I sometimes miss is going to an all you can eat buffet and trying a little of everything I like. Now I have to choose a couple of things and just have those.

Thank you all so much
i'm feeling a little easier now, :) xx

Its quite normal to question wether you're doing the right thing or not, I'm sure most people here did. I had sleepless nights worrying:eek:

But after the initial few weeks of purees and sloppies you'll be introducing new foods as you fancy them.

Nowadays, because I cant eat loads I choose very particularly. If I fancy something I have it just smaller amounts...I'm not talkig junk here..I have like 3 delicious scallops that I poach with a little garlic and white wine. or I have a real taste for spice so will make up a little curry with the best quality ingredients I can. I even had my own fried rice (Fry light) with king prawns, chicken and ham for tea tonight.

So there is life after bypass and soon you'll be enjoyig all thye benefits :D

I lay on the operating table and cryied as was worried but iI am so happy I had the op.
I don't miss any food. I sadly can't have anything with much flavour at the tick but this can be normal and will change in time. I have found I don't like things I loved before and like stuff I hated.
Good luck with your op.

I dont miss anything - as we can have it if we want, albeit very small portion - I was worried about the social side, as we would eat out a lot - but so far not really bothered, saving money !! hehe - I think the thing I miss the most - is the choice - but not the eating - I dont seem to want anything at all so almost have to force myself to eat - What i have in place of those wants, is the freedom to not be worried about stuffing myself, putting on more weight, and regretting it on a daily basis

unlucky for me my taste buds havent changed at all, so I still cant stand veg and still want my bad habbit foods, but u no what I can still have most of them only tiny amount and chips were my biggest downfall I had them every day atleast once a day pre op I could count on 1 hand how many times Ive had them so far and when I have its usually been 3 or 4 chips with chicken in curry sauce and that keeps me satisfied its strange and very hard the first few weeks but the further u get and the more weight u lose it all becomes clear why u would put yourself thru this op in the first place. I havent dumped....yet lol, but am sure there still time I can eat a full snack size chocolate bar tried that couple times over christmas but not had any since.
There is definately life after a bypass xx

awwh Thank you, you are all so lovely and
thank you all for your help,
jane :) xx

My taste buds haven't changed at all, I still like the same foods but don't have the terrible cravings I had. I eat curries etc a lot as I love strong spicy food. I haven't had pasta, Rice or bread as I prefer to fill up on protein and veg. I have been to an indian restaurant twice recently, I have the mixed kebab starter, it does me 2 meals! I don't bother with the poppadums or anything else though and it doesn't bother me. I haven't had chocolate but I have had a couple of biscuits (I don't dump). I haven't had any fatty food but then again I don't want it either!
I thought I would mourn food, but now I find out it's never really been the friend I treated it as, it is just fuel!

I did the round up of all the meals I knew I would not be able to eat post op. Pasties, currys, burgers even some things I didn't ever eat, just in case! Now I look back and wonder how I ever liked those things.

Initially I was so focused on learning new eating habits I didn't think about the "old" foods and then as the months went by I realised I just don't miss them.

I had heard that your tastes can change post op and my one concern was that I would no longer enjoy coffee, so I do remember lying there and saying to myself, please let me wake up still loving coffee! (and I do still love it!) The only thing I can honestly say I miss is fizzy drinks, I miss diet coke, but I think it is a small price to pay for so many gains.

It is a great adventure and it has its ups and downs, but I am loving it. Good luck on your journey.
