So I'm about to start eating soft mushy foods. Do u measure 2 oz or do u just feel full? I just am scared my body isn't going to tell me when to stop :(

Hello hun - I know its a bit strange knowing what amounts to have when you start on mushy foods. If you weigh 2oz and put that amount in a bowl ready to eat, you may feel you only want to eat a few teaspoonfuls, or only 1 or 2.

The measurements are only a guideance. You may find you feel you have had enough more quickly, and don`t want to finish whats left - which is fine!
If you feel any hunger, then you make a little more, by another couple of teaspoons.

You should`nt be feeling much hunger at this stage, and compared to what you were eating before - will be eating very little.
The thing to be careful of is not to stretch your pouch, by eating more than is necessary. Your body should be telling you when you are full. If you feel hunger between meals - have a glass of water and wait 30 to 40 mins to see if you still feel hunger - is it head hunger, or do you feel you hav`nt eaten for a day or two?

If you look under the green headings above under forum jump (on the left) you will find pull-down headings and there is one relating to post-op diets, and soft food diets, that should give you ideas of different foods, so you don`t get too bored. :)

Good Luck with your weight loss - enjoy the rest of the Christmas holiday, and have a great New Year!

Take care hun x

It might take a while for the pathways that send the I'm full signals to your brain to recover so measuring is very important.

Don't worry if you can't get the full measure down in the early days its common to not want to eat much or at all, just get down what you can, but when its gone its gone and you should stop at that point

It is kind of crazy how you think you are ok and could just get that last teaspoon full down only to find it will tip you over the brink and that it all then comes up

Make sure you chew even pureed food really well and take very small bites. Good luck with it

I would suggest food weighing should be used as just a guideline. We are all really different in how we tolerate foods post-op. Some people are fine & can eat a recommended amount (whatever that may be as advice varied greatly from provider to provider), others can be ill by eating only a few teaspoons of food, or by certain food groups or consistencies in the first few weeks after the op. Others still can become the 'poster-girl' for puking many weeks after their ops. The most important thing is to recognise & identify that 'full' feeling you get after eating. I literally feel full, as I would have before my op, but really quickly (a few mouthfulls), so I generally know when to stop before I eat too much; for others it may be felt as tightness/fist in their chest (quite high up). Also, don't forget in the early days post-op, while on sloppy foods, you may actually be able to eat a bit more than when you get onto more solid foods, essentially because sloppy food or anything with alot of sauce would be termed a slider food & goes down easily. However, putting this into perspective, you will just never be able to eat the amount you did pre-op...you'll be sick pure & simple. Like Kat says, if you've had a bypass, you won't feel true hunger pains, I haven't once since my op, so if you think you are feeling hungry, it's more likely to be psychological than actual hunger. The only way you will know is to try things, do not rush eating, and trust yourself to learn what is best for you.
