Questions about revision surgery

Hello _ I don't tend to use these forums much so sorry if this is in the wrong place! I had Roux-en-y gastric bypass march 2008 and lost just over 12 and half stone getting down to 14st - for me that was positively skinny and I was pretty happy with that - for the first time in my life I wasn't stressing about loosing weight it was like a huge pressure had been lifted. I kept the weight off relatively easily and went on to have a baby in 2010 and didn't gain any weight with that pregnancy but then had another baby in sept 2013 and gained 2st. I have spent the last 4mths trying and failing to loose this weight and it is totally freaking me out, I cannot seem to loose it - I loose a few pounds and then put it back on again very easily. It seems my restriction has gone and my pouch is no longer working I am terrified I am going to gain more weight. I have been reading and discovered that some bypass patients have a revision operation called band after bypass. My questions are - has anyone had this op and under what circumstances did they have it? Did they have to pay or was it NHS funded? Did it do the trick and help them start to loose weight again? Any information about this and revision surgery in general would be much appreciated. I feel such a failure I haven't got the nerve to go and speak to my GP about it. Thank you.

Hi Martha
I'm sorry I didn't have bypass but had DS nov 11.. but I saw a post the other day about re setting your pouch it was a 7 day plan for eating etc and seemed to be well thought out by a bypasser and included protein etc and it had worked in getting the pouch back to how it was at first, I'm terrible at remembering things but I do know it was Maphilips who posted it :) hope that helps you and good luck xx

Anyone know about revision surgery?

After much soul searching and anxiety I have made a private appointment with Mr Slater at chichester to discuss revision surgery after I have gained 2stone and lost practically the whole restriction from my RNY gastric bypass (march 2008) following two pregnancies. I am unsure what form the revision surgery may take, I am finding information on the internet confusing - band over bypass, injections, fobi ring?? has anyone out there had revision surgery following bypass and what form did it take and did it restart their weight loss? I would be grateful for any information received.

I don't know about revision for bypass but good luck xx

from me phone :D

Hi Martha

We do have members on here who have had revisional surgery. To be honest though, I don't think we have any active bypass revisioners.

Good luck with your research, from what I've read the fobi ring seems to be the norm xx

Oooooh snaps! I am looking at revision for my bypass as well.....xx

Hi would be really interested to hear about this revision surgery. Could you fill us in please?? X

Hi im in a very similar poaition to yourself, was operated on by Mr Somers , op was massive success it was only after a very bad experience with extended abdomnioplasty that things startedcgoing wrong ive since gained almost 5 stone and am terrified at tge thought if ending up back where I was, id be interested to hear your story and follow your journey to revision to see wethrr I too may be helped.
so far I have had an endoscopy to confirm the anastomosis enlargement, but then no one wanted to know :-/

I have just had a revision. From a gastric bypass, I have had a band put over the top. A BOB! Welcome to ask any questions!

Ooooh questions I have lots what was reason/ time frame you realised it needed banding?
Hm did you have to pay did they class it as a trad banding?
Is it working? X

It was the past three years really (had my bypass in 2006), I was just going up and up. I spoke to the barbaric specialist nurse (and was on a course with another one, so asked lots of questions!), and she basically said that weight gain can be an issue.....it is only a tool and my operation was quite a while ago......so would have been deemed successful.

So, basically I contacted the southwest bariatric centre, which is where my surgeon worked privately (previously with him nhs), arranged an appointment....and the rest is history.....all 11 days of it!

It's a very very lonely world being a bypass revisioner.......xxxx

So did you have to ho private? Were you private originally?
Have they revised the original surgery ie widened the anastomosis or have they banded you? H a ve you had to follow exactly the same preop diet post op eating plan?
Did they give you any advice about scar tissue etc as you move into the future? One of my fears for actual revision and not banding over my bypass is that we nsturally eat less as we get older anyway, what happens if there is significant scar tissue making it impossible to eat at all ?
Sorry so many questions

I didn't try nhs, went straight to private as I sort of 'had enough' and just wanted to get things moving. First surgery, bypass was on NHS. As I said above I have had a band over my bypass (BOB).

I don't really understand your question about scar tissue.....as the bypass won't produce any scar tissue, and my band is over my original pouch....as for eating less when we are older....well I guess all banders will have to think about that, never something I have ever thought about, guess I'll cross that bridge when I come to it!

My pre op and post op diet is exactly the same as bypass which is fine as I knew what to expect!

No problem asking questions, I wish there was more folk I could have talked to about revision.

I have put on a lot following my bypass 6 years ago, I am trying to save hard to have revision distal bypass in Latvia.
I’ve done loads of research and my friend had a full bypass there and has had amazing results.
