Hi all,
I'm just wondering what happens in the pre op assessment that u have a week or so b4 surgery? Also wot happens at the hospital, first day? Second day etc? Do u have to have a catheter fitted? Any info would be great.
Thanks :)

Hi don't have my op till fri but the preop is blood test I had one normal and one artery in my wristm weight and blood pressure and fill out a health questionnaire and I had another ecg as mine was done so long ago! Not much to it. Prob talk to you about pre op diet but really depends on when u r scheduled for op. Hth xx

Hi,
On the pre op I had my blood tests I was weighed and I had an ECG. I also spoke to he dietician about my eating habits and what to expect on the pre op diet and the post op diet. I also spoke to a specialist nurse who went through my medical questionaire checking which medication I am on etc and which surgery I preferred and which they thought was best for me. It is nothing to worry about.
Good luck x

My pre-op pretty much the same as Lyndsey's.

I got weighed, had blood pressure taken, blood tests, ECG (which I HATED!!!!!) and a general list of questions about any medication I'm taking, family medical history, any previous conditions I've had etc.

On the day of going to hospital I went to the receptionist to announce my arrival and give her my admissions letter then went to sit in a waiting room. I sat there for about 10 minutes then was called by a nurse into another room on my own. Sat in there for about 1hr30 pretty much on my own. A physio came to see me to talk me through post-op exercise and to give me a spirometer (something I had to suck on after the op, once every 15 minutes to help my lungs), after she went the anaesthetist came to see me to ask a few questions, then after him my surgeon came to see me briefly to get me to sign the consent forms. All three visits were about 15 minutes out of the 1hr30! Towards the end of my time sat waiting a nurse came in with a lovely gown and some paper pants and asked me to get changed. Then a theatre nurse came and fetched me and we walked down to the theatre waiting area. I sat there for about 10 minutes before another nurse lead me into the anaesthetic room and I climbed onto the bed. Don't remember anything after that point apart from waking up on the ward :)

I didn't have a catheter, within a fairly short period of time the nurses on the ward had me up out of bed and walking to the toilet, they then did this pretty much every hour. I stayed in hospital one night and came home the next day.

All very quick, hassle free and painless really!

H xx

Thanks everyone!! I think it's different at different hospitals, I've been told I have to go in at 3pm on the Thursday then will have the op sometime Friday all being well should be discharged late Sunday :(

Hi, I had my op at Sunderland in November. Pre op was MRSA swabs, bloods, lung function (I have asthma), ECG, height, weight, BMI, blood pressure and pulse.... I think from what I remember ;)

On the day I was admitted, I went to the ward at 3pm. They took more bloods as my pre op was more than a week before my op. I was examined and just settled myself in. The anaesthetist came to see me to discuss my anaesthetic and then on of the surgical team came to consent me..... I think thats all that happened.... ;)

I went to theatre at 8.30am I was first on the list on the Tuesday and didn't fully wake up until 8pm (I had a pre med which didn't help!) - I didn't have a catheter and I required only paracetamol for pain :)

Day 1 post op was fluids only a litre I think and I was allowed a cup of tea at bedtime :D

Day 2 was a little muller yoghurt for brekkie (about 1 table spoon in total) and then discharged :)

Any more questions just ask ;) x x

Xxpigsgalorexx thanks that's really helpful, my main things I'm thinking of are what I need to take with me (I get very board easily) do they have bed side tvs? Are u allowed to wear ur own pjs? Visiting? Will my other half be allowed to be there when I go down/wake up? (I'm a right baby when it comes to things like this) also I was asked to quit smoking when I saw the bariatric nurse Kim a while back but haven't I saw my surgeon (don't knw his name he's new) and he never mentioned smoking so me being me still never quit now my op is 3rd of Feb and I'm worried I've left it to late now and that they won't do the op :( if u don't mind me asking which surgery have u had and which surgeon did it? Xx

P.s I knw there are some silly questions in amongst all that but I'm a silly kinda lass! Lol x

Yes u can wear ur own PJs except when u go to theatre (you wear a gown) and I wore plain black cotton knickers for theatre ;)

Visiting is 2-4pm and 6-8pm ;)

They have the bedside TV which is £15 for 3 days/nights... I also took my MP3 and Kindle but didn't use these... I stuck to the TV which also has some fairly up-to-date films ;)

I had a Gastric Sleeve under Mr Mahawar (he is the 'new' guy) ;)

I didn't have anyone there when I went down or came back so can't help.... but I did have a pre med to help with my nervousness lol :D

Not sure about the smoking, but I am sure u aren't the only smoker having an op... speak to the pre op nurse :)

Don't worry about ur questions I had loads before mine to its natural... feel free to ask more or PM me anything else u need help with ;) x x

That's my surgeon :) I best take some money for the tv il just sit and watch that lol, was there many other people on the ward with u? Another silly question but I'm a snorer and really worried I keep everyone awake all night :( I've put a patch on so not smoking now :) I think I will have a pre med to calm me down xx thanks xx

He is a really nice guy. For the TV I used a debit card, you can pay by the day but the 3 day package is cheaper and a pretty good deal. I was very lucky and was given a side room so I didn't get to see anyone..... I enjoyed having my own space and privacy however I think I missed out on the social aspect. They gave me Temazepam (sleeping tablet) as my pre med and I think it made coming round after the op more difficult for me..... I had my pre med at 7... went to theatre at 8.30 for op at 9...got back to the ward at 1ish I don't think I woke up properly until 8ish... just in time for Holby lol...... but I was nice and relaxed... x x

Oh great il use my card for tv to, got my letter about the surgery today and it says I'm getting it done by mr shroader now xxx

All of the surgeons are lovely... you will be fine... I am up to 2st 2lb loss so far in 8 weeks ;) x x
