Refused surgery

Hi everybody,

Are there any circumstances where private surgery is refused?
For example, age, health, family history etc.
I'm just wondering what kind of questions I will be asked when I go to see them.
Also, what kind of involvement does your GP have to have if you are having op privately?

Hi, mine was done in the Czech Republic in one of there normal hospitals rather than a private one but obviously it had to be paid for.

They should ask you lots of questions about your health, fitness, previous operations, medication that you have taken in the past and your mental health - just to make sure that you are aware of what changes you have to make after surgery and the impact that this will have on you.

The health issues are the only ones that I can imagine them turning you down for surgery on, we had extensive test that we needed to pass before the surgeon was happy to perform the operation.

I had my bloods taken to check for any infections etc and then an ultrasound on my stomache, my chest x rayed, an ecg, a chat to confirm that I felt healthy and a camera down my throat to check that there weren't any ulcers in my stomache.

I would imagine that the only reason they would turn you down is if they decided that it wasn't going to do your mental health any good or you had an under lying medical condition that would make it dangerous to operate.

I had mine done in Belgium and had very similar tests to Andrea. I agree with her - they'd only turn you down if there was a medical reason - mental or physical. My op was arranged in this country through WLS. When I left Belgium I was handed a letter to give to my GP. Later I was emailed by the surgeon a list of the blood tests he would like carried out for the next 2 years which I also gave to the GP. I also gave my GP's details to WLS so I expect they'll be in touch with her. She's been very supportive because she knows what a battle I've had over the years.
