I am in bits, I was in touching distance of having this gift of an operation.

I am in constant pain and my quality of life is just shocking. My depression is really effected by this change of events.

So, In November my GP said I did qualify. I was over the moon.

Months of waiting to hear about my funding.........found out my application had been lost.

2 weeks ago I managed to find out that I had been approved- over joyed!!

then today I get a call from my GP surgery manager to tell me the GP had decided I no longer am qualifying. - DEVASTATED.

The area I am in is BERKSHIRE. Please does anyone know what the requirements are for bariatric surgery? I have been hunting but cant find a thing and its ruining my nerves.

I have asked to speak to the GP, and have managed to secure a telephone app with him on Monday. Yes I know Monday isn't that far away but I am sure you can understand the way I feel.

this feels cruel and unjust. I have a BMI of (as of this week) 57 (!). from what I have read a BMI of over 50 means weight loss surgery is a "first line" treatment?

I am not sure what i'd do without the people in this forum <3

Oh dear, so sorry!

The goal posts have changed since the nice guidelines - even then it was up to each pct if they followed them or not. Now, from what I understand, the GP gets the say (I maybe wrong).

I know its hard but try and stay calm, spend the weekend thinking of questions to ask your GP etc. Number one question is obviously why?!

Good luck xx

You can find out what your local PCT guidelines are at BOSPA.org, if you are in England. Both East and West Berkshire have very tough conditions, looks like your GP cannot refer direct to wls.

"BMI over 50 with diabetes or severe dismobility due to obesity sufficient to affect essential activities of daily living and who have been receiving treatment which has included diet and exercise support, pharmacological therapy and counselling in a specialist obesity management service and failed to respond adequately. Access to surgery is only via specialist obesity management service."

Not good, but at least you know what you're dealing with when you go back to GP. The very best of luck to you.

I'm afraid the info on BOSPA is very much out of date, as I said things have changed.

There's no such things are PCT's anymore either. They were abolished in March 2013. We now have clinicial commissioning groups (CCG's).

CCGs are clinically led groups that include all of the GPs in their geographical area, giving GPs and other clinicians the power to influence commissioning decisions for their patients.

Oh my gosh, that must be soul destroying. I wish I could get there now to give you a hug! xx

I'm so sorry to read this, I think this is the cruelest thing! I would have an extremely frank conversation with your GP. Your BMI is 57 which more then fits the criteria. If the conversation with your GP is not satisfactory, arrange an appointment with the GP and practice manager. I would also contact your local PALS (google it) and CQC. I'm hoping it doesn't come to this but you cannot tell someone they have been given funding and take it back. The situation will have to proceed by the original acceptance of funding, even if it has changed. Message me anytime and I will help you fight it. I think what you have been put through is awful! Stay strong and fight this, you can do it!

You are a fountain of knowledge! Thank you so very much for giving me that update. I was in a big mess with Google.
May I ask you something more? If the CCG system is now in place does that then mean that the decision for my surgery is back in the hands of my GP?

I already have my funding approved so I am not sure if I am getting this or not

*banging head against the wall*

It sounds like you are the girl to know! I need your fight! I feel so beaten down by it currently.
I'll let you know what happens during my phone call on Monday.

thank you so much for taking the time to help, care and advise xxx

thank you for caring =)

I do not have people around me who really support this decision for surgery so the people in this forum are a god send!

xxxxx

yep its upto each gp now mine was put through within minutes i had a call to say which hospital do i want to use
ive heard some people swap gp surgery if they are not understanding maybe thats an option for you hun
this whole thing is frustrating mine is going so smoothly but waiting for a date is hell too
good luck with mondays call

See how Mondays call goes. If your not satisfied. You could always find a new GP. But before it comes to that, try to switch a GP in the surgery too. But this conversation on Monday is important so please let me know the outcome and anything I can help with. I don't know much about the CCG, but I do know GPs have more control, but not total. Unless you gave lost 10 stone since you were excepted I cannot see how this can be done to you. I'm angry and it's not even me lol! Thanks for your kind comments I will do my best to help. Let me know about tomorrow. Until then, try to relax, it can all be dealt with.

Damn, that's terrible, I really feel for you :(
That must be worst than just getting a straight no in the first place, rather than getting your hopes up, and then dashed like that.
I hope your GP has a good explanation for their change of heart. Maybe you might be able to talk them back into reversing their decision? Good luck, and keep the faith x

Dreadful! Poor, poor you. Some great advice here. I have my fingers crossed for you. xx

how did your phone all go Hun, have you got any answers?

Hoping all ok xx
