Hi. I live in kuwait and it's my first time posting here. Im considering doing the sleeve surgery in may. I'm really confused. Can someone tell me about their experiences with it please? Which is better: sleeve or gastric surgery?

Im about 50kgs overweight! Really have tried out every diet out there. Nothing seems to work as I have a weird relationship and love for food.

Pls tell me the positive and negative experiences please!

Abby

Hey Abby :D

Welcome to the forums!

There are various gastric surgeries, the most popular seem to be:

gastric band
bypass
sleeve

Ive personally had a sleeve, and it seems to be working well for me (im 2 months out). You need to be honest with yourself about what your issues with food are. Eg chocolate lover, savoury lover, massive portion sizes etc. Your answers should guide you to the best surgery for you :)

I wrote a little about my own process for choosing which surgery on my blog

hope you find your way and if you have any questions, just yell!

x

Welcome aboard! The sleeve seems to be a good compromise between bypass and band and we have some fantastically successful sleevers on site who have done great with their op of choice.
Have a good read around the boards but be guided by your surgeon as they will suggest the most suitable op for your personal habits and circumstances x
All the very best with whatever you decide x

Hi and :welcome:
I had the bypass and am loving the weight loss BUT i wish that I had known about the sleeve before.
It seemed at that point in time it was only offered to people with a massive BMI with a view to lose weight and then convert to the bypass, But now it is used as a half way procedure between the band and the bypass.

I had the sleeve in February last year and I really can't be more grateful for it. I've lost more than I ever imagined I could.

Whatever surgery you decide on, you will need to work with it and 'follow the rules'. The surgery is only the start and you need to change your attitude to food and life.

Good luck x

Hi Abby. I'm pre-op bypass so can't really offer any advice on the sleeve, but just wanted to say welcome to the forum. I've found it invaluable for finding out everything I could before deciding on surgery. Good luck with whatever you decide and hope to see more of you on here.

Or possibly less of you if you have the surgery! ;) x

lol yes of course!

Welcome to the forum. I am pre-op so can't specifically give you personal experience.

I originally seriously considered a band, but as I was nhs funded my hospital did not do them. Between the sleeve and the bypass I really wanted the sleeve, but after talking to my surgeon, and rest of the team I was advised to go for the bypass. They take into account eating habits, medical conditions, weight etc.

I am having this done in just over two weeks. It was not my original choice, I would still prefer the sleeve, but I am trusting the experts on what is best for me.

There are lots of posts from successful sleevers, banders and people who had bypasses, have a good read get the information you need so you can chat to the team about what you want and what they think is best for you.

Good luck with whatever decision you come to.

Hi Abby
Had my sleeve in January and all in all with pre op diet have lost 23kg and continue to lose 1-2kg every 10days approx and I feel great.
I opted for sleeve rather than bypass as I have had repeated helicobacter pylori infections which can give rise to chronic heartburn/ulcers and if need arises I can still have a camera inspection of my remaining stomach to check it.
The main difference with sleeve compared to bypass is that the greater portion of stomach between 75-90% is actually removed completely (rather than stapled and left behind) and with it the part that secretes ghrelin a hormone that stimulates appetite and hunger (discussed in detail obesityhelp.com)
.
When I asked my consultant how much he had removed he said almost all of it and I have now what can only be described as a slim banana shaped stomach hence very small portions (teaplate size) thing is I don't ever feel hungry now its more like an empty sensation and very quickly feel full on eating.
The other thing with sleeve you don't need the 3 monthly vit B injection (bypasses need this) although it is useful to take some tablet multivits in the first couple of month until you establish a decent eating pattern.
Have no regrets whatsoever.
