Sipping water

I could well be wrong here, but I think it's the whole 6 weeks, until back to a "normal" diet -

I don't know the correct answer (still pre op) but my understanding it a day or two.... if you gulp more than you should I suspect it will just come back up again. Can you try medium sips and go from there? maybe use a straw to stop the risk of gulping?

good luck - apart from sipping fluids, how is everything else? xx

Thanks all

Witch I am loathe to post how I am doing for fear of it sounding like I am gloating but I feel fantastic just 1 week post op. I came out of hospital on Wednesday last week feeling absolutely fine and as the days have gone on there has been no real change. I rested Thursday and Friday and then spent Saturday at my beach hut and didn't do much but just rested and enjoyed the sun. I have had doubts that I have actually had the surgery! I don't have the stamina to do too much, for example after loading the dishwasher i had to sit down for a while and rest but I have absolutely no pain, no nausea and have breezed through the week of fluids. I am now on sloppy purees and had a yoghurt this morning and just tucking into runny mashed potato with cheese which is a delight!!! My wounds are all tiny and nice and dry and I've lost a STONE since the op last week.

I am very wary though that this is early days and there are lots of hurdles ahead but my mindset is that if I had carried on as I was pre op I would have ended up jobless and probably bed bound so whatever I have to sacrifice during this period is a very small price to pay. Sx

Paddy, don't resist telling it how it is - I think it is AWESOME that you are doing so well and it fills me with hope and gladness that it will be the same for me when my op comes round! WELL DONE YOU!!!! xxx

Thanks Witch. I made a decision very early on that I was not going to languish in the house because I know that I am the type of person that can wallow and once I feel sorry for myself I then start to feel unwell and so the cycle goes on and on.

I do absolutely believe that unless there are physical reasons - ie pain from the surgery or nausea etc, that state of mind has a lot to do with how you get over this major life changing event. I have spent this morning on the internet looking at nice new knickers which I will buy in a couple of months as a treat (who knows, someone may even benefit from seeing them rofl) sx

Just spoken to my lovely lovely bariatric nurse and she says to start taking bigger mouthfulls once I am ready but obviously not huge glugs and if that hurts or feels uncomfortable then return to sips and try again later.

I am delighted to report that I have just had a moderate mouthful of actimel and it went down smashing!

Glad to hear that, l, like you am feeling on top of the world, and wonder if he actually did the bypass! Yesterday unexpectedly l had to walk about half a mile, because of road closures( the bike race) l managed it , l would of definitely of struggled before.l am also very aware that it is still very early on in this journey .

I was told to avoid drinking with a straw, as it means you take in air at the same time as liquid.

I'm now nearly 8 weeks post sleeve and can comfortably take in more liquid, including, joy of joys, HOT tea!

Glad you feeling great.. one stone in on week wow

Keep sipping until you find you can drink more. You will get to a stage when you can take a good few gulps but at the moment it would probably just come straight back up, don't rush it as it takes a while for your pouch to heal. I can drink about a quarter of a pint of fluids in one go now before my pouch feels tight, then I just wait a little while for the fluid to move through it and carry on. Don't use a straw though, as it's be said you will take in in with it and it will hurt.

In a way, yes it is forever, but you will find that you can't force it and it becomes automic. I can drink normal sized mouthfuls, but I can't glug. And if I try it still hurts!

At my first appointment at Derby the anaesthetist said that he has found the more positive, upbeat and realistic the patient is going in to things the more likely they are to recover quickly with less problems.

So pleased all is going so well.

I tend to something slightly bigger than sops, but not too mcuh x

Interesting about the straw idea - I can see the logic, depending how deep you have it in the liquid... wouldn't want to swallow something I didn't mean to... argh - everything sounds so smutty! You guys know what I mean though! x

Sounds interesting, in my hospital they gave me straws sometimes... I didn't know that you shouldn't, and apparently neither did they. Oh well, I never drink with straws now. Glad you are feeling so well, that's good and well done for losing a stone since last week.

My hospital gave me a menu to choose my meal when I was on nil by mouth and offered me tomato soup in spite of the fact that I am allergic to tomatoes and had a sign on my door (and a wrist band) to say so!

So I'm not surprised they also offer straws ...
