Hi guys, i've got an appointment at walsall manor on the 3rd March regarding my breathing and possible sleep apnoea. Can anyone tell me what to expect. Do they have to run certain tests? will i have to stay in hospital to be monitored whilst sleeping? many thanks x

I had a little machine that I had on overnight at home and had to take back to the hospital the next morning, it was fine and I slept well with it on even though I thought I wouldnt :D XX

Thanks dottychic, that puts my mind at rest. Got a little phobia of staying in hospital on my own, i sound like a baby i know. I've never had to, that's the thing.
Did you have sleep apnoea?

I didnt hun, but when i filled the questionnaire in some of my answers flagged up the possibilityof it.....I was pleased I didnt lol....had enough problems without that too! :D XX

i know what you mean chic, when i started my weight management i was very over weight but with no other health issues. But one by one as the tests were done i now have sleep apnoea( maybe), diabetes and to top it off polycistic ovaries. Not the healthy fat bird i thought i was eh. Oh well we'll see what happens the 3rd March x

Thanks dotty.....love the support you all give x

Just a finger clamp and a band round your wrist for pulse.Over night, take it back next morning.

I had to stay overnight for mine and I was recorded all night and had an oxygen measuring device on my finger all night.

They would not expect you to stay all night without lots of warning so if your letter does not say that, then you will just have a machine to bring home. My oh had the machine a while ago, and that does seem to be the norm.

Good luck with your appt.

Sarah my Trev had his at WM and they ask some questions and give you a monitor to bring home that goes on the end of your finger when you go to bed. Ask them for a finger sock to keep it on as it can come off....

As much as being certified with sleep apnoea may slow down your surgery as it is another comorbidity it can only help with your fight for funding....

Keep the faith and let me know how it goes, fingers crossed xx

Thanks jane, not sure what it is about staying in hospital that gives me the gitters?? could be the lack of food lol x

Hi Sarah - Like you I was the fat bird who thought I had got away with life's problems.

I had the sleep apnoea test as the machine at home, and thought I would deffo have it as I ticked all the boxes about falling asleep, sleeping while travelling in the car etc etc. That was the only test that did come back fine LOL

I just had the test as a machine at home, and as has been said, thought How can I sleep with that thing on and little tubes poking up my nose, but I did and it was fine. The peg on my finger also stayed on all night, so that wasn't a problem.

My appointment at the hospital (in Cornwall though) was just to teach me how to put the machine on at night and to explain what would happen. Hope it all goes well for you. Trisha

Here is a link to the sleepiness scale which is probably what they will talk to you about. I spent the night in hospital completely wired up legs as well as they tested for restless leg syndrome at the same time. All hosptials differ but they will tell you what they want at that appointment
Good luck

Sarah, hope all goes well. I have to have the test too (at Darlington Memorial) but I don't think I'm staying in as my appointment is for 10 in the morning! Hopefully, it'll be a case of picking up the machine and doing it at home.

I scored 15 at the questionnaire test and Sunderland refer anyone scoring over 10. I don't sleep very well - haven't ever since I was small, and I do get tired during the day.

I have had a couple of days last week where I slept through the night without getting up to go to the loo, etc - don't know if its coz I'm eating healthier but somethings changed coz I don't feel as tired as I used to. Perhaps its the coffee I'm drinking to stop me snacking!!!

Thanks everyone...feeling much better about the whole thing now. Bring on the 3rd march, i'm ready for it lol x
