Hi there

Was just a little worried as I have sneezed a couple of times today and it feels like my intestines are ripping wahhhhhhhhh! I am sure they are not but has anyone post op had a problem with sneezing in the first week after surgery and has it caused any problemos?

I dont feel snotty or have a cold it just makes me feel ill the thought of well you know, popping something!

I have'nt had this but I'm a bander so maybe a bypass mini will know something about it. Try holding a cushion to your tum if you feel you're going to sneeze again as this will help with the uncomfortable feeling. Hope you feel better soonxx

Hi hun - sorry I cant help with any advice on the sneezing thing, but if it is resulting in pain...or popping...you need to get it checked out! I only say this as there have been a few stories about where thats happened and turned into something much worse! Contact your team or your GP! Hope Im not scaremongering you!

Sally xx

thanks for your replies

I dont think it has done anything, I guess the thought is always worse than the reality lol. If I think something is amiss I will call the team
:)

Hi

Are you hugging yourself when sneezing or getting a pillow and grasping it to your tummy? This can lessen the pain and the strain.

I once read that Grand Prix drivers slap themselves hard on the leg if they feel a sneeze coming as it stops it happening. They can't afford to close their eyes during a sneeze when they're going so fast. It might work for us too!

Hi Phoebe,

I remember being terrified of sneezing, coughing and hiccupping in the very early days. As others have said, put lots of pressure on your tum if you feel one coming on - either with a pillow, or just by gently pressing in from the side if that makes sense.

It does get easier though hun. Promise x

If you feel a sneeze coming on, press your tongue flat against the roof of your mouth hard for a few seconds, it makes the sneeze go away!

Pillow is an excellent idea! Everything is sore and swollen and needs time to heal so normal things like sneezing can hurt. I had a hiccough fit the other day and my insides hurt for 2 hours and Im six months down the line LOL

The pillow makes absolute sense, I will keep one with me if I can, infact I have a really lovely lavender and wheat filled cosy heat bag that would be ideal...Oh hold on it might be the lavender in that which is making me sneeze (Doh). I like the leg slapping and tongue gymnastics ideas too!

I am now educated in the mastery of sneeze sidestepping.....Skills I tell thee, skills :)

thanks all Xx

Love the tongue idea can't wait to try that the next time I want to sneeze. I can feel for you, although I don't have the same opp I have been sneezing and coughing for a week now. I just sneezed there and forgot the tongue thing already, as my natural re-action is to look at a light and get it over and done with lol. When I was still in hospital I had a cough and was told to hold my stomach when coughing. Hope you get rid of it soon, it's bad enough having an opp without having to worry about other things that could go wrong.

Take Care
Jeanx
